Staff Meeting Minutes

07/08/15 from 1500-1630

Attendees: Todd Larson, Erin Messinger, Jill Rable, Michelle Friesen, Jackie Miller, Brianna
Trujillo, Amber OMalley, Carrie Stinnett, Beth Markwalder
Phone Attendees: Char Sbrega, Sandra Salomon, Kimberlee Chislock
Positions: On-call positions are going to be posted in the near future. We are looking to hire
several candidates who have already completed the 40 hour SANE-A didactic course and are
ready to move into the clinical portion.
Shift Feedback: Most nurses have expressed that they do not mind the 0700-1900 weekend shift
times. We know that this is difficult do to child care reasons for some nurses, and encourage
them to pick up partial shifts in lieu of not picking up any shifts. For example, if someone can
only work until 1700, Im sure arrangements can be made in order to accommodate this request.
Most staff members are willing and able to help co-workers out for a couple of hours. Jackie
stated that she can work with filling partial shifts and send out needs to cover small gaps in
coverage. We are aware that some people also prefer to take smaller chunks of time. Please
continue to provide feedback on this matter and we can always re-evaluate if need be.
Post Call/Day Shift Start Times: Day shift nurses can be called to start an exam at 0500; NO
EARLIER. Please refer to Jill or Erin for any questions or clarifications on this matter.
Non-DV Strangulation Exams: We have received multiple calls from various agencies
requesting medical forensic strangulation exams on non DV relationships, such as stranger
assault and strangulation. If the agency is requesting the exam and is willing to pay for the exam
in case the county attorney refuses payment, then we will be happy to perform the exam. Please
ensure to get approval for the exam from command staff, such as sergeant level or above. Patrol
officers are not able to authorize non DV strangulation exams. Usually a simple phone call will
result in the approval for the exam. Please make sure to document on a note on the front of the
chart who has authorized the exam. Again, any questions please ask Erin or Jill.
Areas for Growth: Our unit has been asked by the medical examiners office to assist with their
family reference sample collection for missing persons. We are also looking to expand the role of
the FNE to include performing exams on possible sexual assault homicides and other types of
assault where injury documentation or evidence collection is needed. This can include
performing injury documentation exams on suspects, not solely evidence collection. Anyone
interested in this area should please let Erin know. We are looking to see how many of our nurses
would want to participate in this, just as not every nurse is trained in pediatrics.

Windows 7: Installation has begun at the Shea campus and will be installed at all centers by
September.
Court: Todd has decided that Kathy is going to be handling all superior court trials for nursing
staff. She has done this in the past and is in the office during the week when there is court. She
will notify each nurse of their upcoming trials and stay in contact with paralegals and attorneys,
as well as send nurses their charts and subpoenas. Please continue to stay in contact with City
Court staff, as Kathy is not keeping track of City Court. She will notify nurses when they receive
subpoenas for City Court, but will not be calling and checking on City Court. This is the
responsibility of the nurse. Please ask Kathy if you have any court questions.
Please send Jill or Erin your times for court when you are there. Eventually this information will
be entered into FEMR by each nurse. We are also looking into policies for payment when we are
called to City Court and it is cancelled.
Performance Evaluations: Supervisors will be reaching out to staff in order to meet with them
regarding performance evaluations.
Practice Reminders: Please always contact an office staff member or supervisor when you have
obtained cultures on the weekend or during the night. These are times sensitive and we must be
notified so we can arrange for pick up as soon as possible. Please continue to store the
Chlamydia culture in the refrigerator after specimen collection. The pink Gonorrhea culture can
remain with the chart in the nurses office.
Please do not allow law enforcement to hand over blood or urine from a patient that has been
seen in a hospital. We have no way of knowing this is actually from the patient. Law
enforcement can impound these items. This also maintains a chain of custody.
Please encourage patients to participate in all aspects of a medical forensic exam, such as
changing into a gown, photo documentation, injury documentation, etc. All of these aspects are
potentially vital to an investigation. Patients may decline any part of the exam at any time, but
please try to convey the importance of full participation in the exam process. We understand that
some patients are pressed for time, have child care issues, etc, but please be as thorough as
possible while respecting their time.
Simulation Lab: The simulation lab is getting new simulators and we are going to be looking
for nurses who are interested in driving the simulators in order to enhance nurse and
community partner training. Please let Jill or Erin know if this is something you are interested in.
More information will be released as it comes available. Regulator simulator training is going to
be a part of the FNE unit in the near future. This is a great way to brush up on old skills and learn
some new techniques!

Thank you everyone for the long hours and hard work you put in to make our unit run efficiently
and smoothly. We appreciate you! An invite will be sent out to the next staff meeting in the
coming weeks.
