The fixing of the exchanger to the ground, must be done only after the intended site of the
exchanger has been levelled.
ARSOPI-THERMAL recommends that models of a greater dimension should be fixed in place by
means of steel bolts, previously inserted before the concrete foundations. Models of a lesser
dimension, should be fixed in place with a steel plug after the concrete foundations have been laid.

Each bolt is positioned in the intended site in accordance

with the dimensions supplied in the design, before the
concrete is laid. The concrete then sets the bolt in place
after it has dried.

After the exchanger has been fixed to the ground, it must be connected to the pipes in
compliance with the drawing of location of inlet / outlet.
The following points must be taken into account when turning on the exchanger:

Make sure that the dimension A maximum is in accordance with the name plate.

Make sure that none force moment or vibration are acting upon the connections.

Make sure that the pipe system connected to the exchanger is secured against
sudden pressure surges or temperature fluctuations by the use of shut off valves,
safety valves and vent valves.
Make sure, LQWKHFDVHRIFRQQHFWLRQVPDGHXSRQWKHPRYDEOHSUHVVXUHSODWH(
or on the connection plate, that the pipe is applied in such a way as to enable it to
be opened easily. It is advisable, due to the above reason and the fact that the
pressure of the plates are variable, to use piping with flexible connections.
(see fig. 2.4.).
Please ensure that during the welding of the connection tubing to the heat
exchanger no physical contact occurs between the heat exchanger and the tubing,

1. Before initial operation make sure that the plate pack is clamped to the correct
compression dimension A maximum;
2. Make sure that all connection pipes are screwed tight;
3. Make sure that the permitted values for pressure and temperature given on the name plate
are not exceeded;
If these conditions are fulfilled, the exchanger is ready for operation.

STARTING UP THE EXCHANGER - STEPS TO FOLLOW

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

4 . CLEANING A CLOSED EXCHANGER

The need to clean the exchanger is dictated by the particular application.
Always make sure, however, that no encrustation or other deposits form on the plates and that
these are removed immediately. Encrustation and other deposits impair the heat transfer
performance of the exchanger and may cause or accelerate plate corrosion.
&/($1,1*&,3- &/($1,13/$&(
This is an efficient process of cleaning the exchanger without opening it. Instead of the flow
product, a cleaning agent is passed through the exchanger. Encrustation and deposits are
removed by the cleaning agent's chemical capacity, supported by mechanical action due to
turbulence.
The amount of cleaning solution circulated depends on the design of the exchanger and on the
plant where it is installed.

You should use 1,3 times the amount of fluid to that of the normal amount.

STEPS TO FOLLOW IN THE CIP CLEANING PROCESS

1. Immediately after operation and after having flushed out the product with water, continue to
do so until the water comes out cleans;
2. Circulate the cleaning solution at pre-determined temperature, for the pre-determined
period of time;
3. Flush with water until it until there is no trace of chemical agent.
The success of this cleaning process can be visually confirmed after finalisation. If necessary, time,
concentration and temperature settings should be adjusted.
For the food industry in particular, ARSOPI - THERMAL supplies cleaning and sterilisation
instructions to be used on its exchangers.

Always confirm with the supplier / manufacturer of the chemical agent, its
composition, to ensure that this does not attack the plates and the gaskets of the
exchanger.
At all times must the rules and safety recommendations be
to the chemical agent used.

6 . MANUAL CLEANING OF PLATES

The plates may be cleaned by hand.
After removing the plates from the exchanger, they must be cleaned with care, using tepid clean
water and a nylon brush.
A high pressure jet may also be used to clean the plates.
Under no circumstances must you exceed the 30 bar of the high pressure jet.
When using the brush, take care not loosen the gaskets.

Never use metal objects or abrasives when cleaning plates. Always use soft nylon
brushes (see fig. 6.1).

The high-pressure jet must always be directed face on at the gaskets (see fig. 6.2).

Stubborn contamination such as encrustation can be loosened by soaking in a chemical bath.

Choose a cleaning agent suitable for the type of contamination and for the properties of the plate
and gasket.
Always obtain confirmation from the cleaning agent manufacturer that the cleaning
agents used will not attack the plate or gasket materials.
Normally, in the bath cleaning method, the plates are introduced without the gaskets.
If the gasket is fixed, then it must be removed and replace with a new one.

10 . GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF EXCHANGER

Plate heat exchangers from ARSOPI are essentially composed of a structural support and a
pack of heat exchanger plates. The plates are suspended in the upper guide bar and
FRPSUHVVHGEHWZHHQWKHIL[HGSUHVVXUHSODWH6DQGWKHPRYDEOHSUHVVXUHSODWH((DFKSODWH
has gaskets on the exterior contour to form narrow chambers and to seal the movement of fluids. It
is via these chambers that a given fluid circulates, which yields or receives the heat of the fluid that
passes over the opposite surfaces of the same plates. This may be referred to as a plate pack, or
plate arrangement.
The frames may be designed in accordance with different codes and standards. Common
examples of codes are : ASME and AD - Merkblatter.

12 . DESCRIPTION AND DETAILS OF PLATES AND GASKETS

12.1 PLATES
A heat exchanger plate is a thin sheet of metal (normally between 0.5mm and 1 mm), moulded
when cold in suitable presses.
Its production complies with a strict control system in which marking the respective
stamping lot assures that each plate can be retraced.
It's grooved geometry allows for an increase in the area of exchange and has the double
function of rigidity and giving rise to a great deal of fluid turbulence, when passing through the
channels formed by the contiguous plates.
The plates used in the plate heat exchangers from Arsopi are divided into two types of profile:
washboard and herringbone.
The former permits a channel between plates with a reduced number of contact points. The latter
has a large number of contact points.

The plates can be prepared either for gaskets fixed with adhesive or without adhesive, which we
call slit-in type.
The material used for the gaskets is determined by temperature conditions, pressure and
compatibility with the fluids.
The most common materials used are:
- Stainless steels
- Titanium and its alloys
- Nickel and its alloys.
Inside each plate model, there may be several types of plates with differing groove geometry.
Also, there are plates with hangers or without. (see figures 12.1.3 e 12.1.4)
The figure 12.1.5. illustrates these possibilities.

12.2 GASKETS
These are situated on the peripheral groove of the plate and have the double effect of ensuring
stoppage and avoiding fluids mixing.
All gaskets are designed to ensure that both fluids at the transfer ports are kept separate from
each other by means of a double-gasket guidance system. In the event of any leakage in this
area the leakage chamber has the duty of outwardly discharging the liquid via gaps in the
sealing webs (leakage grooves) so that any leakage is immediately apparent. (see fig. 12.2.2)
The gasket are wearing parts. Each gasket has its own inner resilience. This resilience is
affected by temperature, pressure and pressing force. Inadmissible temperatures and
pressures may reduce this resilience and cause the gaskets to harden.
There are two types of gaskets: Fixed with adhesive and slit-in (without adhesive).
The former are fixed to the plate by an adhesive.
The latter are held in place by constrictions in the gasket groove.
The gaskets are available in various materials. The choice of the material always takes into
account temperature conditions, pressure, compatibility with the fluids and type of application
whether hygienic (FDA gaskets) or industrial.

12.7 CONFIGURATION OF PRODUCT FLOW

The gaskets are fixed on the heat exchanger plates so as to stop and connect, as established, the
channels between the plates.
Each fluid flows through these plates in alternate channels, enabling them to circulate in
parallel (if the fluids circulate in the same direction) fig. 12.7.1, or in counter flow (if the fluids
circulate in opposing directions) fig. 12.7.2.

FIG. 12.7.1.

FIG. 12.7.2.

Using plates that do not possess four holes, the flow of fluid can be laid out through an
exchanger with other configurations - the situation of multi-pass.
The fig. 12.7.3. illustrates this point, where the fluids flow through two passes, each possessing
three channels.

On the fabrication label attached to the mRYHDEOHSUHVVXUHSODWH(DQGRQWKHGHVLJQRIHDFK
exchanger, you will find the compression dimensions of the plate pack:
A maximum
A minimum

=> Corresponds to the minimum compression of the plates.

=> Corresponds to the maximum compression of the plates.

The exchanger is always supplied, when new, with the dimension A maximum, or rather with the
minimum compression.
Due to the functioning of the exchanger, the gaskets will be subject to wear and this will
consequently result in a reduction of density, which in turn will imply a gradual adjustment of
dimension A .

UNIFORM TIGHTENING:
You must tighten
according to the sequence
indicated on the figure, and
continue doing so until the
intended dimension has
been reached.

FIG. 13.1. - FRAME OF EXCHANGER WITH PRESSURE INDICATION

If the exchanger has not been tightened to the dimension A minimum (maximum tightening), you
may continue to do so as long as it's needed. You must not tighten unnecessarily as this may
damage the durability of the gaskets. The exchanger should only be tightened in the case of
gasket leakages or partial change of gaskets (though not advisable).
When the dimension A minimum is achieved, or rather, the maximum tightening, the whole set of
gaskets should be replaced.
Ring spanners or manual ratchets are used for the above foresaid purpose. For models of greater
dimension and frequent disassembling of plates, pneumatic tools are recommended.
Do not force the tightening of the plate pack when the gaskets are in new condition
in order not to cause damage on the plates/gaskets.

Never exceed the value of dimension A minimum as this will imply a deformation of
the heat exchange plates.

The exchanger must be tightened uniformly (see attachment to fig. 13.1.) to ensure
