Procedures
Performtheanticipatoryset.
Boysandgirls,theseproductsthatwelovetoenjoyandareinourpantriesat
homestartedverysmallandgrewintothesehugebusinesses,whichiswhywe
havetheopportunitytobuythemrightfromourgrocerystoresathome.Earlier
thisweekyousawwhereVermontwasonthemap,cananyonecomeandidentify
whereitisonthemap?Theteacherwillwaitforastudenttocomeandidentify
whereVermontis.Wonderfulwork!HowabouttheotherNewEnglandStates
wehavelearnedaboutthisweek?Theteacherwillwaitforstudentstocomeand
upandidentifytheremainingNewEnglandStates,whichincludes,Maine,New
Hampshire,Massachusetts,Connecticut,andRhodeIsland.
TheteacherwillthentakeoutacutoutofVermontwithstarswheretheproducts
startedandareproduced.OnthiscutoutofVermontyouwillseetheplaces
wheretheseproductshavestarted.TheteacherwillpointoutwhereTheBrown
FamilyFarm,whichproducesmaplesyrupislocated,thenwhereBenandJerrys
islocatedandfinallywhereCabotcheeseislocated.
Thisiswherealltheseproductsstartedandareproduced,doesanyonethinkthey

definitionontheboard,theactionofsupplyinggoodstostoresthatsellto
consumers.Whatthismeansisthatthesecompaniesproducestheseproductsand
thensellsthemtostores,suchasGiantgrocerystoreandothergrocerystores
whereyourfamiliesshop.
Thesecompaniesaswespokeaboutmanufacture(theteacherwillwritethe
definitionontheboardandhavethemwriteitintheirnotebooks;manufacture,to
makesomethingonalargescaleusingmachinery)theseproductsanddistribute
them.
Thestudentswillhavenotecardsontheirdesk,onelabeledA,anotherBandthe
thirdC.Theteacherusesthesenotecardstoassessthestudentstoseeifthey
understandthecontentbeingtaught.Usingnotecardsallowstheteachertoassess
allstudentsatonce.

haveotheranswerstheteacherwillreviewthevocabularywordusingalternative
wordstodescribeit.
Theteacherwilldothesamenotecardactivitydefiningthedefinitionof
manufacturing,andproduction.Thenotecardactivitywillbeaformative
assessmentfortheteacherbecauseitallowsthemtoseeifallstudentsunderstand
thevocabularywordsthatarebeingtaughtthatday.

andthendistributedallthroughoutourcountry!
Oncetheteacherisfinishedshowingtheclasshowtheseproductsaredistributed
throughouttheUnitedStatesshewillpassoutaworksheet.Boysandgirls
pleasewriteyournameontheseworksheetsthenreadthequestionsandanswer
themtoyourbestability.Thisworksheetwillbeyourticketoutbeforeyouleave
forgymclass!Therewillbetwodifferentworksheetsfordifferentiation.

Differentiation

TheteacherwillsitchildrenatthefrontoftheclassroomsiftheirIEPsstatesto,
andaccommodatetothechildrenwhoneedextraoneononetime.Theteacher
willalsoputpicturesupdescribingthevocabularywordstohelpESLstudents.
ForexamplefordistributiontherewillbeapictureofaBenandJerrysIceCream
vanleavingthestateofVermontandfollowingatrailaroundtheUnitedStates,
distributingtheproducts.ForproductiontherewouldbetheBrownFamilyFarm
takingsapfromatreeandcombiningrawmaterialstomakethemaplesyrup.
Lastlyformanufacturingtheimagegivennexttothevocabularywordand
definitionwouldbeCabotcheesegettingmanufacturedbyamachine.Therewill
alsobetwoworksheetsgivenforthesummativeassessment,oneforchildrenwho
areperformingongradelevel,whichasksthemtodefinethevocabularyword,
andanotherworksheetforchildrenwhoneedextrahelp,whichasksthemto
matchthevocabularywordtothedefinition.

once,andhelpstheteacherseeifthestudentsarecomprehendingwhatisbeing

vocabularywords.Theteacherwillalsowanttoassessthatthestudents
understandsequencingbywatchingthestepstoproduceicecream,cheese,and

ReflectiononPlanning
ThissocialstudieslessononVermontneededfarmorecontentthananyother
lessonsIhavedoneinthepast.Ienjoyedseeinghowmuchmoreinformationand
factsneedtobeinasocialstudieslessonsincethestudentswillbelearningmany
differentconcepts,andgettingtaughtfactsaswellaslearningandapplyingskills.
WhendevelopingthislessonplanIfoundittobemoredifficultsinceIwas
shapingalessonplanoffacts,althoughitwaschallengingIenjoyeditbecauseit
gotmetoexploreoutofmycomfortzone,sincesocialstudieswasnevera

favoritesubjectgrowingup.IthinkitisimportantthatIexploredoutofmy
comfortzoneandbecamefamiliarwithsocialstudieslessons,sinceIasafuture
teacherwillbeteachingmystudentssocialstudieseveryday,andIwantmy
studentstoenjoythesubject.AfterwritingthislessonplanIwasthinkingofways
toimprovethislessonplan,IbelieveincorporatingGooglemapswouldbeafun
waytoengageandenhancemyfuturelesson.WhereIbelieveImightfind
successforthislessonisgettingthestudentsattentionwiththeanticipatoryset,
sincetheygettoholdtheobjectstheywillbelearningabout.Ialsobelievethe
studentswillbenefitfromtouchingbackonapreviouslessonontheoutlineof
Vermont.WhereIhaveconcernsaboutthelessonsisthevocabularywords,Iam
worriedtheyhavesimilardefinitionswherethestudentsmightstumbleon,
althoughassessingthatthestudentsunderstandIwilldothumbsupandthumbs
downallowingmetoseeifIcanmoveonordescribethedefinitioninother
words.
