From The Editor

Austrian Wines really did Trimingham proud with
their selection of wines at the tasting last Friday,
Chris and his charming wife Ingrid came not
only bearing wine but Austrian smoked pork pate
delicious. Raising over 150 towards our New
Village Hall.
Saturday I visited Cromer church which was very colourful with
trees, wreaths and nativity displays and super gift ideas .
The Cromer lighting up was amazingly well supported although the
wind was rather challenging! I am looking forward to Mundesleys
Street Market with their lights switch on Sunday afternoon
Here in Trimingham our Christmas Tree Festival begins this
Saturday at 11am and completes on twelfth night, Free admission
and parking
The church is festooned with trees of all shapes and sizes supplied by
the villagers. The churchyard tree will be lit at 4pm with some carol
singing then refreshments in the Pilgrim Shelter all very welcome
On behalf of the Crab Tales team, present and past, we wish all our
advertisers and readers Merry

Christmas and a peaceful

prosperous 2016

Drop off at: K Hardware, Church St. CROMER
Dear Editor,
I was absolutely disgusted when I read the
letter from Mr Graham in the Crab Tales. I
have never read such bigoted and shallow
minded comments in my life ! I have
managed charity shops in the past (starting
as a volunteer when I was unemployed after
being made redundant) and had a wide range
if volunteers, all of whom were invaluable.
How dare Mr Graham comment on people
that he does not know. Volunteering, as
well as giving something to the community
can be a life line to someone who
may had had a hard time and lost their
confidence. It can relieve loneliness and
help a person feel valued. Keep up the
good work Cromer volunteers you should all
be proud of yourselves.
Regards
Annelouise Avis
Dear Editor,
I am writing to complain about your
publishing of the letter by Philip Graham
in issue 075. I think this letter goes well
beyond opinion and enters the realm of
hatred and abuse.
cont...

I am not alone in my view. The letter and

your role in dealing with it have been
discussed and generally condemned on the
Cromer Facebook page. I am not myself
an unemployed individual, but I feel for
those who are, and also for younger people
in general who work in charity shops and
who have read Mr Grahams chilling and
repellant bile.
If you have any decency you should print an
apology in your next issue.
Yours faithfully,
Ian Webster
REPLY FROM THE EDITOR.
Well Ian, thank you for your letter. I hope I
am a decent person but an apology from me
would be inappropriate .
The oft quoted words attributed to Voltaire
spring to mind, I disapprove of what you
say, but I will defend to the death your right
to say it. Not sure I would go quite that far.
Freedom of speech does not exist to allow
people to say the popular. It exists so that
views that some disagree with can be aired.
Our obligation is to allow reply, which i
hope you feel we have done.

Dear Editor,
We are writing to thank all of those who
supported us and the Cromer and District
Foodbank at our fundraising dinner on
Friday 20 November 2015 at the Constantia
Restaurant, East Runton.
It was a fun evening with good food and
entertainment from Simon Curtis and the
Constantia Brothers.
The Right Honourable Norman Lamb MP
popped in and generously donated a bottle of
signed House of Commons Wine and tea for
two at the Houses of Parliament which were
auctioned and raised a stunning 200 on the
night.
People also generously donated 24 bags of
much needed supplies to the foodbank which
will support those in need in North Norfolk
over this festive season.
A stunning 642 was raised on the night
and we would just like to thank everybody
for their support and generosity.
Yours
Michael & Laura White

Dear Editor,
I was more than shocked at the letter you
printed from Philip Graham in issue 75.
how dare he assume young people are all ill
shaven scruffbags or work shy criminals.
Sheringham and Cromer do not offer much
employment for its young citizens, except
seasonal work. And if the Job Centre, calling
it a Labour Exchange reects Mr Grahams
generation,
hope to help young people gain work
experience via voluntary roles, then these
young people should be encouraged, Not
insulted.
Had it not occured to Mr Graham that many
people, regardless of age, find social skills
a problem. And the sort of bigoted attitude
of people like him deserves to stay in the
dark victorian workhouse days.
Yours Respectfully

Dear Editor
I have to say that once again the villagers
of Gimingham, Mundesley, Knapton,
Paston and Trunch have really pulled the
stops out. Collectively you have raised
4180.19 for the Poppy Appeal. This
amount is outstanding. I cannot find the
suitable words to give you all the thanks
you deserve. Your donations, church
collections, the work by our house to house
collectors, hours spent by collectors outside
Mundesley Post Office in miserable weather
and the help given by proprietors allowing
Poppy Trays in shops and pubs all go
towards the national figure.
Nationally 51 million was spent last year
helping those in need.
The Royal British Legion was able to fund
Recovery Centres around the country to help
those badly injured to regain their health,
with a further 18 million.
Every week last year the Royal British
Legion was able to channel a staggering
1.7 million into its welfare activities for ex
servicemen.

NEW VILLAGE HALL FOR

TRIMMINGHAM?
Trimingham Parish Council in North
Norfolk has received 28,260 to develop
plans for a new village hall and community
centre with capacity for 240 people, ample
car parking and improved access. This
will better support the local community,
reducing isolation and the need to travel
for things like health services and fitness
facilities. Activities in the new hall will
include a film club, gym, health surgeries,
bridge club, bingo, line dancing and a youth
club. Outdoor play equipment will also be

FRANCAIS FRANGLAIS

Every Tuesday afternoon the caf is going

French.
Every Tuesday afternoon through the winter
there will be
informal French
conversation
buzzing round
the caf in North
Lodge Park. Its
a chance for people
to meet others who
are interested in the French language and
who maybe want to practice speaking and
listening said Barry Meadows who helps
in the caf and who lived in France for over
10 years. There will be no formal lessons,
just light hearted conversation, with varying
degrees of French thrown in, more like
Franglais Barry adds. Theres no charge
for the afternoons, and lots of opportunity to
try the delicious gateaux de la maison.
North Lodge Park is a small 5 acre park
on the clifftop in Cromer; it was once a
quintessential English clifftop park (and we
hope it will soon be restored to its former
glory).
The caf, known locally as North Lodge
Park Tea Rooms, is run by the community
with all profits being invested in the Park.
The caf in North Lodge Park has been open
since the start of August, the Friends have
taken an extra 4 months on the licence to
open the caf through the winter. The caf
is open 6 days a week from 10am to 4pm
selling Cakes, Crepes, Teas and Coffees.

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT...COUNCIL STYLE

Parking in North Norfolk District Councils car parks will be free

over the weekend before Christmas (19 and 20 December).
The Council has decided to once again waive the parking charges
prior to Christmas, as in previous years.
The decision supports North Norfolks businesses and traders by
encouraging people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies in their
local towns. At a crucial time of year for the retail community, it
is also a gesture of goodwill for the festive season in response to
requests from businesses.
Cabinet Member for Assets Cllr John Rest said: At such an
important time of the year for retailers, it is vital that the Council
supports local businesses.
There are scores of excellent shops across the district offering a
wide range of goods and services.
By providing this weekend of free car parking, we hope to
encourage people to use that wealth of provision.
On December 19 and 20, shoppers will be able to stay throughout the
day without a ticket in any North Norfolk District Council run car
park, saving them up to 1.20 an hour.

Sheringham Coastwatch
Needs You!

If variety is the spice of your life, being a volunteer with Sheringham

Coastwatch must be the ideal role for you.
What other voluntary role ranges from giving water to a thirsty
dog to (on one occasion!) helping to dispose of a hand-grenade? Or
helping a holiday-maker with weather or tidal information and then
helping in a Coastguard search. And all without moving more than
ten feet.
Our volunteers keep a lookout over the cliffs, beaches and sea visible
from the former Coastguard lookout high above the Sheringham
golf course. If we spot someone in trouble we immediately contact
the emergency services (usually HM Coastguard) and provide any
assistance requested by them.
So as well as enjoying the spectacular views there is enormous
satisfaction in knowing that we are helping to ensure the safety of
those on the sea or using the beaches and cliff paths.
Whether you are male or female, of working age or retired, you
could enrich your life by joining our friendly group of volunteers.
Members come from many different backgrounds and work for
three hours on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
No previous maritime experience is needed. Full on-the-job training
and on-going support is provided. Professionalism and common
sense are the order of the day, not physical ability.
Like to join us?
You must be at least 18 years of age and fit enough to walk to the
lookout up a fairly steep hill over some uneven ground.
To find out more please either ring the Station Manager -01263
713392 or email-info@sheringhamcoastwatch.org.uk.
Also www.sheringhamcoastwatch.org.uk has more information.
An application form and a further information sheet can be
downloaded from the website or can be picked up from our lookout
which is on the coastal path on Skelding Hill above Sheringham Golf

A big thank you from the Wings Appeal
Organiser for the North Walsham Branch
of the Royal Air Forces Association Mr
R.E Barker wants to thank all those who
gave their time to help in the collections
in Hoveton, North Walsham, Aylsham

generosity. Together we raised the sum of
2830. This has been forwarded to the Royal
Air Force Benevolent fund from where
it will be used to help both serving and
retired Airmen and their families in need of
assistance. I would also like to thank those
stores and shops that also helped in many
ways but mainly by providing us with shelter
from the weather.

WILL NOTHING EASE THIS PAIN?

Norfolk man completes World

War One Pillbox Trail
A World War Two enthusiast has turned his attention to the
historic legacy of World War One and completed a trail aimed at
highlighting Norfolks built heritage.
Alan Hancock, from Great Yarmouth, spent a day tracking
down 12 of the 14 pillboxes which appear in the North Norfolk
World War One Pillbox Trail leaflet.
The trail forms part of North Norfolks World War One
Centenary Commemorations 2014-2018 and offers directions
and advice on how to find the structures. It was launched in the
summer by North Norfolk District Council in partnership with
members from the NNWN (North Norfolk WW1 Network).
Mr Hancock said his wife had picked the leaflet up from
Sheringham Tourist Information Centre during a day visit.
I am mainly interested in World War Two but also have an
interest in World War One, said Mr Hancock. We spent the
best part of a day on the trail, starting with the furthest pillbox
from home, at Stiffkey. We then worked our way down along
coast and then inland, finding 12 in all. It was a lovely drive and
an interesting challenge.
Considering they are all the best part of 100 years old, I was
surprised to find how well preserved the pillboxes were.
Some were harder to find than others because they were
covered with ivy and overgrowth.
Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Culture at North
Norfolk District Council, said: The built heritage of North
Norfolk is something to be celebrated in many different ways.
The pillbox project is helping people discover a very specific and
important part of that heritage. The trail is a fascinating day out
for history enthusiasts.
The pillboxes are located at Stiffkey, Weybourne, Beeston Regis,
Aylmerton, Thorpe Market, Bradfield, Little London on the edge
of North Walsham, White Horse Common, Wayford Bridge and

Bowen therapist Rosemary Barber runs a busy clinic in

Aylsham every Thursday as well as clinics in Hellesdon and
Little Plumstead. Rosemary explains
Bowen is a very gentle but powerful
and effective therapy. Many people are
desperate when they come to me. They
want to reduce both the pain and the
amount of medication they are taking.
The conditions I see most are back, neck
and shoulder problems, also arthritis,
fibromyalgia, headaches any condition
that causes pain. Several regular clients
come to relieve anxiety and stress.
Bowen is a light touch, hands on therapy
suitable for all: young, old and frail and
used by sportspeople to maintain their
bodies in the best possible condition and
reduce the incidence of injury.
An Aylsham client, who presented with shoulder and other
joint pains said ... I suffered for a year. After visiting the
hospital and having a cortisone injection in the shoulder I
was pain free for 8 weeks but the pain came back so bad I
could hardly get my clothes on and off. Then i booked an
appointment with Rosemary. I can now get dressed with ease
and my hip and knee pain has disappeared too, in fact my
whole body feels so much better. Another client declared,
the best back treatment they have found.
Rosemary trained in Bowen Therapy after seeing the positive
benefits to her own daughter.

2500 RAISED FROM FAYRE

Well the 50mph winds across Mundesley did not deter local
residents who ocked to the RBLWS Christmas Fayre on Saturday
21st November. Coronation Hall and The Church Rooms were
brimming with Christmas decorations, gifts and other delights with
visitors embracing the Christmas spirit. The result, over 2500 raised
for the benefit of the RBLWS Benevolent Fund.
The committee of the RBLWS Mundesley & District Section would
like to thank all those who came and supported us and the volunteers
who generously gave up their time to set up the stalls, man them so
cheerily and then put everything away.
Out next event is the RBLWS Christmas Carol Service on
Wednesday Dec 16th 2pm at All Saints Church followed by
afternoon tea at Coronation
Hall. Wed love to see all of
our members, so please come
and sing your heart out to
favourite Carols of RBLWS

BOOST FOR CROMER

LADIES LIFEBOAT GUILD
Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild are pleased to announce that the
money that was raised on their stalls on Lifeboat Day 2015 has
just received a fantastic boost, thanks to Chris Ericksen, who is the
Business Manager (North Norfolk Coastal area) for Barclays Bank.
Under the 4 (pound for pound) community scheme, members
of Barclays staff identify a charity whom they wish to support,
matching the value of their fundraising, up to a maximum value of
1,000. Chris said that the RNLI is such an important charity that
she wanted to ensure that her support went to the Ladies Lifeboat
Guild. Thanks to her generous donation, the total that was raised by
the Guild Stalls has now risen to 4,075!
Chris presented the cheque for 1,000 on Saturday 28th November,
during the Guilds Christmas Bazaar. The Ladies Lifeboat Guild
Committee would like to thank Chris and Barclays Bank for their
generous donation as well as the Guild members and the general
public for their continued support.

They take on the strays that have served their seven days in the

TINSEL, TURKEY &

TRAUMA
Its that time of year again, pulling out the
decorations, fattening the turkey and the
coming together of the tribe all building to
that one special day Christmas!
Unlike many other countries where
throughout the year various events, both
religious and non-religious are celebrated
with great and communal outpourings
(Thanksgiving in the USA for example) we
in the UK focus all our energies on this one
day.
As someone who doesnt celebrate this
festival Im still fascinated by the sort of
madness it instils in the people around
me who do. Of course Christmas is all
about ethics and values linked to Christian
tradition, the practice of giving, charity,
sharing, coming together of family,
remembering old friends and making new
ones, love and compassion.
So why is it so stressful!
As the whole populace in a sort of
unconscious frenzy moves towards the 25th
December we see an increase in mental
health issues or rather their symptoms, such
as depression, suicide, aggression to name
a few. Also why as a community orientated
event does isolation actually become more
acute not less, I know its a bit of a clich
these days but it has more meaning than
ever; have we forgotten what Christmas
really means.
Maybe its worth doing something you have
never done before like introduce yourself
to a neighbour who you know is alone for
a chat on the door step, in such a rural area
many people are disconnected from family.
If youre not comfortable approaching a
stranger in your area pop a Christmas card
through the door with a warm note and
best wishes they may connect with you on
another day.
When you are altogether as a family, is there
someone who sits apart in the room?Connect
with them, not everyone is comfortable in
family gatherings, I know Im not, it may
make all the difference in the world and its
the one day you can do something out of the
norm.
I will not pretend to have all the answers,
though I have a few, here is a guide for those
who struggle through this period and even if
you dont its worth taking note:

Most important, dont be afraid to

ask for help, draw on the people around you
dont take on the burden of Christmas alone
its a shared experience, and that includes all
the work behind it.

Talk to someone about how you

really feel at this time of year its surprising
how therapeutic a chat can be to release a bit
of pressure

If you are alone and have access

to the internet, use it to connect with others,
you will be surprised how many people
share similar feelings to you about this time
of year and you can always be anonymous
online

14
076 FINAL CUT.indd 14

Treat yourself, if you live alone

spoil yourself because you deserve it

Choose not to celebrate Christmas

at all or start your own tradition

Watch your alcohol intake try not

to start drinking to early and pace yourself
as it leads to irritability, low mood, even
aggressive behaviour and can exasperate
mental health conditions.

Remember its only one day.

To all the readers of Crab Tales have a

happy and therapeutic Christmas and to
those of us who do not celebrate this festival
enjoy your day off.

todays article please drop me a line.

Patients urged: please

dont ask for painkillers
on prescription
Its your NHS please use it wisely is the
message to people in North Norfolk and
rural Broadland as a new campaign seeks
to highlight the true cost of providing
small quantities of low-dose painkillers on
prescription.
GPs at the 19 member practices within
North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning
Group (CCG) currently write about 107,000
prescriptions a year for paracetamol and
ibuprofen at a cost of 400,000.
But the CCG has agreed to change its
approach to make the best possible use
of resources. As a result, GPs are to stop
prescribing these painkillers in small
quantities for short-term use, with patients
encouraged to purchase their own from a
local shop, supermarket or pharmacy.
By choosing less expensive generic or
in-store brands, patients can buy their
paracetamol or ibuprofen for less than half
the price the NHS pays when providing
themon prescription.
Dr Linda Hunter, North Norfolk CCGs
clinical prescribing lead and a member of its
Governing Body, said it was important that
patients were aware of the drugs true cost to
the NHS.
With 16 paracetamol or ibuprofen tablets
widely available for between 20p and 40p,
the fees the NHS pays to provide them on
prescription can be much higher than the
cost of the drugs.
At a time when the NHS is facing huge
financial pressures, providing small
quantities of these painkillers on prescription
is not an effective use of funds, Dr Hunter
said.
Every time a doctor writes a prescription,
the NHS incurs charges through dispensing
and administrative fees and if GP time is
also included the cost rises even higher.
By doing so they will help us save money
that we can then invest elsewhere to ensure
its spent providing care for the patients in
North Norfolk and rural Broadland who need

it the most.
As part of its campaign, North Norfolk CCG has produced posters
for local GP practices, health centres and libraries. These explain
that the 400,000 spent each year prescribing paracetamol and
inbuprofen as tablets, caplets, gel and suspension products is
equivalent to more than,

80 more hip replacements or

15,385 more hormone treatments for breast cancer or

18,000 more Alzheimers drug treatments (average cost) or

490 more cataract operations or

13 more chemotherapy treatments
Patients with existing medical conditions who require paracetamol
and ibuprofen in large quantities or higher doses will continue to
receive them on repeat prescription.
Anyone who requires further information can pick up a factsheet
from their local GP surgery.

MUNDESLEY GETS ALL
DICKENSIAN

Make a note of the date, Sunday, December 13th. Mundesley will

be having a Dickensian Street Market and Carol Singers. You
can also enjoy food, mulled wine, a free Father Christmas in his
Grotto and the Village Lights Switch-On. Starts 2.00PM.
No entry fee so it promises to be a great event that all can
enjoy. The Parish Council choose this over the other proposed
Dickensian theme with all children over the age of eight sent to
the Workhouse and the young and elderley fed a suspicious thin
grey stew.
I myself have been eyeing up the prize Turkey in the Butchers
window, you know the really big one. Sadly i have nowhere to
store it so ill probably get it Christmas morning if i can find a
local lad to fetch it and of course if the butchers are open.
