Introduction:

LZ-> SLD Pre-teaching of concepts, allow time for processing,


allow answering of questions orally, write down answers for student
to copy.

Review KWL chart that was completed on Monday to remind us of


our book for the week.

Introduce the Comprehension Skill: Main idea and details


Explain that every book has a big idea, which is the most
important thing the book is about.
Read the title to students. Explain that the title often provides clues
about the books big idea. Invite students to share what they think
might be the main idea of this book.
Give students these tips for practicing the skill.
Think aloud: When I begin to read, I first stop to ask what the
passage is all about. Then I figure out what the author wants me to
know about this topic.
Then explain that the author will give details that tell more about
the main idea. Now youll practice finding the main idea and details
in two passages. When you know the main idea, youll be sure of
what the author wants you to know.
3 minutes
Introduce the book:
Explain to students that sometime the amount of information is so
large that the book is divided into sections or chapters and each
chapter or section in the book also has its own main idea.
Model how to look at the table of contents to identify what we may
be reading about in the book.
Ask students to walk through the book by looking at the pictures
and some of the words to activate their schema and prior
knowledge.

Guide the Reading:
Begin having the students take turns to read out loud.
I will have students read up until page 6, making sure that they are
completing their KWL charts as we go. We will see if we answered
any questions on our chart after page 6 and check our
understanding.
Read through page 13 and stop to fill out our charts.
Read until the end of the book.
15 minutes

Introduce the graphic organizer about main idea and details.


Explain that the main idea goes into the center circle and the
supporting topics or key details go into the circles connecting
around it.
Guide students to pick out specific details in the text that supports
the main idea. Explain that this may be the title and one detail from
a chapter in this book because there is so much information that the
book was divided into sections.
2 minutes.
Work on Graphic Organizer:
Allow students to work on their graphic organizer individually
while monitoring for completion. If there is not enough time, have
students finish in tomorrows small reading group.
7 minutes.
Wrap up:
So lets review, what do we look for in our reading? Main ideas and
how do we support the main ideas? Key details. Very good. I will
see you all tomorrow
