Research - Library Visit

Essential Questions:
1. What role does advertising play in the lives of youth?
2. What makes an effective argument?
NVACS/ Standard(s):
W.7.7 - Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related focused
questions for further research and investigation.
RI.7.8 - Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is
relevant and sufficient to support the claims.
W.7.8 - Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and
accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a
standard format for citation.

Language Objective (student-friendly):

I will conduct research to gather relevant information from multiple sources.
Lesson Introduction/Warm-Up: Standard 1-New Learning is Connected to Prior Learning and Experience
Ask students to explain how comfortable you feel citing sources when conducting research. After quickly
assessing students, conduct short review on the pieces of information needed to properly cite a source. Explain
to students that they will begin gathering research on their topic for EA 2.2, but in order to have a credible essay
they must cite all their sources.
NEPF IS 1.2 - teacher makes connections explicit between previous learning and new concepts and skills for all
students.
Concept and Skill Development: Standard 2-Learning Tasks have High Cognitive Demand for Diverse
Learners

Review citing sources

whole class, conduct research
whole class, evaluate arguments and claims in sources and take notes
independently conduct research
independently evaluate arguments and claims in sources and take notes

NEPF IS 2.3 - tasks progressively develop all students cognitive abilities and skills. Activities are scaffolded,
and students have the opportunity to work whole class, as a group, and independently.

Practice: Standard 3- Students Engage in Meaning-Making through Discourse and Other Strategies
High Level Questions Using your own knowledge, what reasons and evidence do you think will support your claim?
What sources should you consider? How will you determine if the sources you find are credible?
What important information did you gather from your research? How can you use this
information in your essay?
1. Whole class will conduct research on the class topic of school uniforms. Students will do a shared
reading a teacher selected source online. Teacher will model how to fill our their Argumentative
Research Log. Students will take notes in their log.
2. In their groups, students will read another source on school uniforms. They will evaluate the
argument and take notes in their research log.
3. During the second hour of the block, students will visit the library. They will be introduced to the
Gale Opposing Viewpoints website.
4. Then they will explore the website to choose a debatable topic for their essay.
5. They will conduct research on their topic by finding two valid sources, evaluating the argument
in their sources, and filling out their research log.
NEPF IS 3.2 - teacher provide opportunities for all students to create and interpret multiple representations.
Students are interpreting and evaluating multiple sources as they conduct their research online.

Closure: Standard 4-Students Engage in Metacognitive Activity to Increase Understanding of and

Responsibility for Their Own Learning
Ticket out the Door: What did you learn today? Why did you learn this? How do you know that you have
learned it?
NEPF IS 4.1 - teacher and all students understand what students are learning, why they are learning it, and how
they will know that they have learned it.
DOK 1: Recall: review citing sources properly and credibility
DOK 2: Concept/Skill: whole class, conduct research and evaluate arguments
DOK 3: Strategic Thinking: independently, conduct research and evaluate arguments
DOK 4: Extended Thinking: begin constructing valid and logical argument for embedded assessment
Standard 5- Assessment is Integrated into Instruction
Assess students ability to conduct independent research and trace and evaluate the arguments in different
sources. Use student research logs to ensure students have selected a debatable topic for which they will find
multiple sources of information.
NEPF IS 5.3 - teacher structures opportunities to generate evidence of learning during the lesson for all students.
Supplementary Materials:
assess to computer lab or Ipads, Research log graphic organizers

Potential Modifications to Lesson:

Consider allowing students to share their independent research with the class or grouping students in pairs and
allowing them to conduct their research together.
