To My Dear Ancestor, Phillis Wheatley,

First Published Female African-American Poet, on Jan. 1, 1863

The day has come that I would see us free,
Abe Lincoln stands for us to see and he,
Tells us our parents need not suffer,
For we found freedom in her1 cover.
My lost one lives in me and gets her2 chance,
To see her loved yet damned, slaved race advance.
Her young, cruel fate inspired her to fight,
It that inspires me to keep my rights.
A devilish thing has been destroyed, thank God,
Though our race will face more pain, hate, and fraud,
But you, dear Phillis, will not see that again.
And thanks to you, our3 new life will begin.
