Vision
Wilcox County Elementary School strives to meet the goals and needs
of all students in every academic area as well as technology. Our School
Improvement Plan helps us to better understand these goals and what is
needed in order to meet them and the needs of all students. Our vision of
technology is included with the School Improvement Plan. (WCES School
Improvement Plan, 2014-15). The teachers at WCES are provided with
various technology tools and resources in order to help their students
achieve the goals intended and expected. The use of technology has
increased not only in WCES but in the school system as a whole. Teachers as
well as administrators have seen how important technology truly is in the
lives of our students and have used these tools to play a huge role in the
academic learning of our students. Each classroom in WCES has been
equipped with SmartBoards and document cameras to use daily. Some
veteran teachers have had to adjust to learning and adapting new teaching
methods, but have been very successful in integrating these tools into their
lessons. Chromebooks were also purchased for Reading and Language Arts
Teachers in WCES, which includes grades 1-5. Most students come to school
already equipped with knowledge of technology and how it is used. By using
technology tools in the classroom as teaching methods, teachers are able to
meet the needs of their students on a level that the students understand and
are eager to learn. We are also teaching them how to use these tools
correctly and successfully. WCES Assistant Principal, Pamela Worthy,
described the need for technology tools in our school as a way of expanding
the learning process of our students and requiring the students to dig deeper
and use their higher order thinking skills. Our school is very small but we are
extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to apply for and receive
various technology grants. Our school system submitted a technology grant
for approximately $200,000 to upgrade the infrastructure of the network and
increase the bandwidth in the school system. Professional learning is also a
component of all technology grants submitted. (J. Childers, personal
communication, September 2014) Increasing technology tools used in the
classroom as well as other methods of teaching assists and increases the
ability and opportunity to meet the primary vision and goal of student
achievement and success.
Needs Assessment
The Wilcox County School System uses student achievement gains on
state standardized tests and supplemental assessments, classroom
observations, and walk-throughs via TKES, teacher reflection, using TKES
self-assessments, pedagogical content knowledge, student and parent
perceptions via survey data, and teacher perceptions of working conditions
to measure effectiveness and to determine if instructional strategies are
needed. The schools of Wilcox County piloted the TKES program two years
ago, and are now working into our third year. With previous experience and
exposure before full integration, the teachers and administrators are aware
of its benefits and how it can assist teachers in increasing student
and school leaders continue to look for learning opportunities for our
teachers that cover each and every academic area.
Alignment to School Improvement Goals
Both school specific and district level improvement plans address
professional learning needs. School improvement plans are reviewed a
minimum of four times annually (at once each nine weeks). The School
Improvement Plan is used as a resource and tool that the teachers can use
and make suggestions of changes that need to be made in order to meet the
needs and goals of all students. I currently serve on the Leadership Team at
WCES and each member is given a copy of the SIP and encouraged to take it
back to our grade level meetings and discuss what needs to be changed or
what things are working and need to stay the same. The administration uses
the feedback from the teachers to make those changes to the SIP and to help
teachers set goals and have a more understanding of what is expected by
the end of the school year.
Funding and Incentives
The Wilcox County School System currently receives approximately
$90,000 Title II-A federal dollars for $25,000 state dollars earmarked for
professional learning/staff development. Approximately $35,000 is spent
each year for professional learning/staff development from Title II-A federal
dollars. State professional learning dollars are all used for professional
learning/staff development and covers the cost of registration for
Diversity
A majority of special needs training workshops or professional
development opportunities are provided through our Regional Educational
Service Agency (RESA). Currently there are three special needs classrooms
with a wide range of student ability levels. Within these classrooms, the
teachers are self-contained classroom teachers and require additional help
and a resource to ensure the needs of each student is being met. The
and encouraged to take it back to our grade level meetings and discuss what
needs to be changed or what things are working and need to stay the same.
The administration uses the feedback from the teachers to make those
changes to the SIP and to help teachers set goals and have a more
understanding of what is expected by the end of the school year. Leaders
throughout the pre-K-12 education community recognize effective
professional learning as a key strategy for supporting significant school and
school system improvements to increase results for all students. As stated on
the Learning Forward website, leaders work collaboratively with others to create a
vision for academic success and set clear goals for student achievement based on
educator and student learning data. (Learning Forward) Some of the teachers that
serve on the WCES Leadership Team also serve on the District Leadership Team.
This team is comprised of staff members within the school system. The district
leadership team meets monthly in order to collaborate with school and grade levels.
The DLT uses the data and information provided by administration and teachers to
create the SIP for each school level. Through collaboration with the DLT and the
leadership team at each school, the goals of our students are created and teachers
are provided with what is needed in order to meet those goals.
Evaluation
Building level administrators conduct formal evaluations using the new
Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES). Teachers also participate in focus walks,
peer observations, grade/departmental level meetings, and leadership team
meetings to reflect on effectiveness in the classroom with their colleagues.
Pedagogical content knowledge is assessed through a weekly review of lesson plans
