Dear Parents,

I hope that all of you and your families had safe and fun holidays together.
The students are concluding our unit on aboriginals and early settlers of
Upper Canada. We are in the process of deciding what related subject as a
Jennifer Shirley, Principal
class we will research and write a report about. The students will select
Jennifer Lisowski, Vice Principal
Heather Nichols, Office Administrator their own topic about aboriginals or early settlers to write a report.

Friday, January 22nd: P.A. Day
Mondays: Library

The students will be given support during this process as they will
experience the same writing, revising and editing as a group when we write
and revise our class report on early settlers or pioneers of early Canada.
Once the students have written, revised, edited and self-assessed their
reports, a copy of it will go home with them to read and discuss with you.
At the end of the month, I will also be reassessing the students' spelling
stages to see how they have progressed since the start of school. New
groupings of students may be made depending on the development of the
students' spelling stages. Information will come home after the new
assessments.
Thank you for your continued support at home and at school. If you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me by email or by phone.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Ramsay

MATH
In mathematics, the students are learning to solve problems that involve telling time to the
nearest five minutes. Students are also learning to develop an understanding of a.m.
(anti-meridiem) meaning before midday and p.m. (post-meridiem) meaning after midday. Students
have made clocks to help them practise telling time at home. Another way to reinforce their
understanding of time is to tell time during authentic situations. For example, if you are about to
eat lunch have your child tell the time. You could also note the time when you have left for an
errand and when you arrive, to then help your child determine the amount of elapsed time.

In mathematics, we will also be learning to solve problems that help us develop the enduring learning
that shapes can be described mathematically, there are many ways to represent 2-D and 3-D shapes and
you can create any 2-D or 3-D shape by putting together or taking apart other shapes. Students will learn
how to identify right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles. I will send home and post on the class
website a key list of 2-D geometry vocabulary to help support the students.
