TheIbanezTubeScreamerreallydoesnotrequireanintroduction.Itisprobablythemostwellknownand
widelyusedoverdriveinthehistoryofguitareffectspedals.VintageTSunitsareknowntofetchintheseveral
hundreddollarrangewhilenewunitsremaincheapandplentiful.TheGreenBeanisbasedonthevintageunit,
knownasthe808,howeveritincorporatesseveralmodstoincreaseitsflexibilityandtonalrange.

As/Symclippingswitch.

TheFatswitchchangesbetweenthestockclippingfrequencycap(47natC4)andalargervaluecap(120nat
C5).ThisincreasesthebassresponseoftheoverdrivebymovingthemidsemphasisoftheTubeScreamer
clippingfromaround720Hzdowntoapproximately282Hz.Thisiswhatcouldbeconsideredthelower
thresholdofthewarmthfrequencyrange,whichtopsoffataround400Hz.TheFatswitchisgreatforlower
gainsettings.Highergainsettingstendtoshowlessdifferencebetweenthepositions.And,ofcourse,youcan
useothervaluesheresuchas82n,100n,oreven150n.Iwouldnotgohigherthan220nunlessyoulikealot
ofmudinyourtone.

TheAs/Symswitchletsyouchoosebetweenasymmetricalclippingandsymmetricalclipping.ThevintageTS
unitusedtwosmallsignaldiodesbacktobackforsymmetricalclipping.AcommonmodforTSbuildersisto
changeoneofthosediodestotwodiodesinseriestocreateasymmetricalclipping.Somepurportthismakesit
behavemorelikeatubeamp,butnah,itdoesnt.Itjustmakesitsoundalittledifferent.Trustmeonthis.Why
wouldIlietoyou?Thereisnoswitchthatsuddenlymakesguitarpedalssoundslikeamps.Thatsjust
marketing.
Anyway,itisagoodmod,soyouhavebothoptions.TheBOMdoesnotlistanyparticulardiodestoencourage
experimentationbutIwilltellmypersonalchoice:inmybuildsD1D3are1n914andD4,D5are3mmred
diffusedLEDs.TheLEDsarelouderandcrunchy,wherethe1n914aresmoothandquieter.But,feelfreetotry
asmanyvarietiesasyoucanstand.Forthisreason,itisagoodideatosocketthosediodesuntilyouaresure
youhavethecombinationyouwant.
BTW:IfyouuseanOn/Off/OnSPDTfortheAs/Symmod,thecenterpositionwillbenoclippingdiodes.Thisis
thesameastheCompCutmodeontheFulldrive2.

Lastly,thetwotransistorsherearenotindicated.ThisisbecauseavarietyofNPNSilicontransistorswillwork.
Theseareonlyusedasbuffersandtheparticulartransistorchosenshouldhavelittleornoimpactonthetone
ofthecircuit.Fromexperience,IcantellyouthatIhaveused2n5089inalotofthesebuildsbutrecentlyIused
BC550instead.TheonlydifferenceIcouldtellisthatthereseemedtobeabitlessnoisewiththeBC550(or
mypreviousbuildswerenoisyforsomeotherreason).Inanycase,thepinoutforthetransistorsontheGreen
Beanisthesameasthe2n5089/88.IfyouuseBC550,besuretoflipthetransistoraroundsinceithasthe
oppositepinout.
