Comparative Study of Oxidation

Characteristics of two gasoline

fuels and n-heptane/isooctane
surrogate mixture
Malik Abdul Wahab

Introduction
Fuels used: FACE* gasoline A and C
Both fuels have same Octane rating
i.e 84
FACE C double n Paraffin than FACE A
FACE C has aromatic HC but FACE A
has negligible aromatic HC
PRF blend of 84% iso-octane/ 16% n
heptane

Methodology
Chemical kinetics Shock tube facility
at KAUST
Diameter of shock tube = 14.2 cm
Driven section 9m long
Driver section maximum length 9m
long

Ignition delay time

IDT is defined as:
Time interval between arrival of
reflected shock wave and extrapolation
of steepest rise is pressure to preignition level.
IDT are scaled to 2 atm using P^-1
pressure scaling

Results and Discussions

Conditions:
Temperature range 1330-1550 K
Pressure 2 atm

Results: (IDT of FACE gasoline and PRF

surrogate)
Similar IDT for both fuels
PRF 84 captures reactivity at entire range (Because
of same paraffinic nature)

So PRF surrogate with same OR and and H/C

ratio can be used to capture global reactivity of
predominantly paraffinic gasoline fuel.

Species Time histories

Conditions:
1350-1550 Temperature range
2 Atm Pressure

Results:
Both FACE A and C gasoline and PRF
surrogate shows same Species-time
histories. (Because of same reactivity)
