VE DAY PARTY RAISES 350 FOR

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
Two parties held in Mundesley over the last few months, organised
by local residents have raised 350 for charity. A VE day party in
Coronation Hall and a VJ day party on Gold Park gave entertainment
for locals to attend at no cost. Raes held during the events raised the
money which is being donated to the Royal British Legion.
Representatives from the Royal British Legion met some of the party
organisers at the Haig Club in Mundesley tonight (10/12/15) and the
money was handed over. The cash is going to be used with the poppy
appeal fund to help needy causes.
Mention was made of the appreciation due to those who donated
prizes for the raes, both individuals and organisations. Also the other
members of the public who made up the teams which organised the
events with no budget and tight timescales.
Pictured are (L to R) RBL Reps; Derek Hawes (Vice president), Alan
Verney (President), Roy Seeman (Membership Secretary), Derek

From The Editor

Happy New Year to all our readers,
Radom acts of kindness have been discussed at
length recently on the morning news and reported in
the daily press.
A lady in the village was the recipient of such an act
prior to Christmas(see letter).
I do hope the instigator of this act felt the release of the endorphins
resulting in pleasure as the scientists state they should, as the
recipient was very pleased.
A way we can all release positive vibes is to exercise and
volunteering whether it be at the local care home, cat sanctuary or
FAITH( see page 12) benefits those we help and ourselves.
Then reward yourself with a delicious meal at North Repps Cottage
Hotel where throughout January they have a brilliant offer see page
2 or pop to Alby Tea Rooms for some of their delicious homemade
scones or scrummy chocolate cake, with the voucher on page 10 you
can have Free tea or coffee
Good luck with getting fit
and try some random acts of
kindness it could benefit the
recipient and yourself
Enjoy your Crab Tales

Dear Editor,
In the current ethos of western society,
wherein financial profit is King, it is
refreshing to hear of a throwback to a gentler
era when caring and service prospered.
An example of this occurred on Sunday the
20th December at Maingay House Sheltered
Housing Scheme in Aylsham.
A Cromer based family run catering business
(Mikes Munch), provided a free delicious
five course meal with drinks to the residents
of the scheme.
The teamwork of the four generations of
this catering family was an inspiration to all,
and an exceptional friendly and condusive
atmosphere combined to provide an
unforgettable occasion.
We wish to express our very sincere
thanks to this wonderful Company for their
generosity, diligence and hard work in
producing this lovely meal and wish them
every success in the future. (They can be
contacted through Gordon Dodd at 01263

Dear Editor,
Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.
On behalf of the townsfolk of Aylsham and
District and members of Aylsham Christmas
Decorations Community Committee, may I
give heartfelt thanks once again this year to
all members of the various organisations such
as The Bure Valley Railway, Aylsham Fire
Brigade and Aylsham Rotary Club , together
with shopkeepers, tradesmen and other
individuals of the Town and District who came
before Christmas to put up the Christmas tree
and Christmas lights around the town and then
again on Sunday morning 10th.January 2016
to take them all down and store them away.
Many thanks also to the ladies of The Flower
Club who decorated The Pump, to the ladies of
the W.I. who decorated The Town Sign and to
Lorene and her ladies who decorated the inside
of The Town Hall so beautifully. Thanks also to
Loretta Chapman and members of her WI who
cooked us breakfast on both occasions.
Our lovely Christmas Tree was again donated
by Mr.Peter Purdy of Woodgate Nursery.
We were able to erect new icicle lights thanks
to some very generous donations by several
organisations and individuals in Aylsham.
I would particularly like to thank Francis
Dodd,my Vice Chairman and Chris Ellis
, who have worked tirelessly and given
a tremendous amount of time, not only
erecting the lights but making sure all the lights
have worked perfectly after they were erected.
Thanks must also go to Graham Reeve who
has refurbished the two large displays on The
Funeral Directors and The Solicitors.
The Community Spirit has once again
showed itself this year in the form of those
extra donations for our new lights. I hope,
as I do, that you all feel that these new lights
have added a further lovely attraction to our
Christmas Decorations. We have had many
pleasing comments .
Johnny and Jason of Coxfords Butchers
gave us a generous discount on the sausages
and bacon given to the volunteers for their
breakfasts on each occasions as did Mr.
Laingchild of Flour and Bean on the bread
rolls . Tesco Supermarket donated 10 to buy
milk, coffee, tea , sugar and sauces .By these
kind gestures of food we are able to use the
money we would spend on food on extra lights.
Thanks must also go to those shopkeepers
and organisations from which we take the
electricity for the lights. Our cables are plugged
into the sockets in their buildings and the
electricity used is donated by them.
We desperately need new members , with new
ideas, to join our Committee, please contact me
on 01263 732396. Our first meeting for 2016
will be on Monday 25th..January in the Green
Room of The Town Hall at 7.30 p.m.
We have several lengths of cable and
many coloured light bulbs now surplus to
requirements. If anyone could use some of them
please contact me on 01263732396.
Keith Elphick. Chairman.

Dear Editor,
I would like, through the pages of Crab
Tales, to extend a big THANK YOU to
all who participated in our Craft, table - top
and collectables Fairs that we have held in
Cromer Parish Hall, throughout 2015. This
includes all our sellers, who have excelled
themselves with their home made craft
goods and other things. Most important have
been the members of the public who have
supported us and spent their cash!! Our
Dedicated Charity this year was the North
Norfolk MS Society. We were proud to have
been able to hand over the sum of 175 at
our final fair of the season, on Saturday,
December 12th. This money was raised
by the public filling up the collection box
and also, by donations by the stall holders.
Well done to all!! We will resume our sales
in 2016. First one on April 2nd. Next year,
we will be raising cash to help the local
charity, Break who do such great work
for vunerable youngsters and families in
the area. If anyone would be interested in
having a table with us next year, then please
call Sue or Tony for information on 01263
649441.
Best wishes to all.
Tony & Sue Archer.
Dear Editor
I have been listening to recent T V
programmes on lonely people
One good answer, is to move into sheltered
accommodation , for over 60s, lovely flats,
your own door. People here who can help
with illness. We have careers & cleaners if
needed, library ladies bring six books every
three weeks and a hairdresser who comes
here, it is a lovely life and especially for all
at Xmas, another thing would help on Xmas
day. There is a free Xmas dinner and after
there a book and entertainment at Cromer
Parish Church
There is a lovely club called About with
friends on Monday middays and a lovely
dinner, puzzles and a lot of bingo also with a
lift there and back
There are places to go and meet people but
you only have to ask.
I also go to Knitting a Club in Cromer
Library once a month I knit things for
children.
So heres hoping you can join something.
I am 93.
Yours sincerely,
Dear Editor,
I would like to thank Father Christmas! Who
very kindly left a hamper of super goodies
on my doorstep in Staden Park Trimingham
on Christmas Eve.
It was very much appreciated sincerely
Teresa

Memories and memorabilia sought

about Great Yarmouths
rock and roll past

Norfolk residents are being given the chance to contribute to a major

exhibition that will be visiting the Time and Tide Museum in Great
Yarmouth next year, documenting the work of the founding father of
music photography, Harry Hammond.
Opening in March 2016, Time and Tide is proud to welcome the
Halfway to Paradise touring exhibition from the V&A, which
will comprise over 80 iconic black and white photographs by Harry
Hammond (1920-2009).
Widely regarded as the founding father of music photography,
Hammond captured the on-stage and behind-the-scenes happenings of
the emerging British Rock and Roll industry, from the touring American
acts of Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis, to home-grown British
artists Billy Fury, Cliff Richard, and The Beatles.
Hammonds photographs encapsulate the spirit of the 50s and early
60s, documenting the fashions, lifestyles, and intimate moments of the
nations early rock and roll idols.
The exhibition will seem right at home in Great Yarmouth, as the seaside
resort town played host to many of the big rock and roll acts of the
era. And with this in mind the Time and Tide Museum is appealing for
Norfolk residents to come forward and tell their stories to form a part of
the exhibition.
Do you remember Rocking the Pier at the Billy Fury Show? Screaming
along to The Beatles at the ABC? Or did Eric Clapton borrow your
guitar on the night Creams equipment was sent to Yarmouth on the Isle
of White instead of Floral Hall in Gorleston? (the band performed with
locally-owned instruments that evening).

draw has taken place,
at the monthly lunch at
Trimingham Pilgrim Shelter.
The winning number was

Village Hall project.

Whether stories, memories, souvenirs, posters or programs

Time and Tide are keen for residents to play a part in
documenting the story of Rock and Roll in Great Yarmouth.

Significant progress for County

Councils Adult Education Services
Staff and learners of Norfolk County Councils Adult Education
Service have received an early Christmas present after Ofsted judged
that the service is making significant progress.
The re-inspection monitoring visit is the third since publication of
an inspection report on 9 March, which found the service to be
inadequate overall.
Following the report the council established an improvement team
to tackle identified weaknesses. In addition, the cross-party Adult
Education Steering Group focused on the improvement plan and
has been providing further challenge and better governance of the
service.
Immediate priorities include raising qualification success rates and
improving the recording of progress and achievement in community
learning.
The new Ofsted monitoring report (which is viewable at http://
reports.ofsted.gov.uk/inspection-reports/find-inspection-report/
provider/ELS/53545 ) states that with support from elected
members and senior ocers, the service is being positioned such that
it can respond to, and inform, wider county council priorities.
Operational improvements are evident and the service is
succeeding in attracting its target group of learners, often those with
poor previous experiences of education, or seeking the qualifications

Generally, teachers prepared lessons well and used relevant

materials matched to learners levels and in the small sample
of sessions seen, the large majority of learners were progressing
well. Learner support is more responsive than in the recent
past and managers and teachers display a strong commitment to
personalising learning.

The 2015 holiday season is now behind us but some

brave folk still make it into Cromer during the bleak winter months
and I would like to point out sites and facts about our town that may
be of interest to them.

Management actions focus well on improving the quality of

teaching and learning and despite obvious progress, managers
continue to recognise through the self-assessment process that,
overall, the service still requires improvement.

Now if you walk down Hall Road and you will come to Cromer Hall,
built in 1829. In 1835 celebrated dandy Beau Nash was a guest
at the Hall and quickly appointed himself Master of Ceremonies
formulating some strict rules of etiquette, dictating that a gentleman
should always take off his hat if a lady walked past the window he
was widdling out of.

More robust monitoring is helping to inform classroom practice,

tackle instances of lower attendance and identify patterns in course
cancellations.

Arthur Conan-Doyle was another visitor to the Hall (not at the same
time) where he was waited upon by a servant Called Baskerville who
owned a very large dog. Thus inspired, Conan-Doyle went on to
create that amusing cartoon character Scooby-Do.
In the early years of the 20th century the author C S Lewis would
be found most summers playing a one-armed-bandit in the Dunes
arcade on the promenade. After his success with The Lion, the
Witch, and the Wardrobe, C S Lewis went on to invent tear gas.
Cromer played some small part in the emergence of the womens
movement when Emmeline Pankhurst and the Suffragettes supported
Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas in the Pavilion Theatre. These days
the Theatre puts on a special Christmas show. I have never seen it
but some people swear it is all right.
In 1933 Albert Einstein came to Cromer after fleeing Nazi
persecution. He was put up in a small hut on Roughton Heath. But he
didnt stick around long and left for the USA where they put him up
in a swanky hotel. And who can blame him.
So there you have Cromer in a nutshell.

Headline data for 2014/15 for retention and achievement is said to

indicate an improving trend for adult learners, with apprenticeship
success rates continuing to be strong.
Richard Bearman, Chair of the Adult Education Steering Group,
said: This latest monitoring report from Ofsted reflects the good,
and targeted, work that is being done to improve the Adult Education
service in Norfolk.
As the report acknowledges, we know weve still got a long way
to go, but staff can enjoy their Christmas holiday knowing that their
hard work is taking this much valued service in the right direction.
And learners can be assured that, as the report says, they are
progressing well and the improvements that weve put in place
indicate an improving trend for adult learners in Norfolk.
Helen Wetherall, Norfolk County Councils Interim Head of
Adult Learning, said: Im pleased that Ofsted have recognised the
improvement that has been, and continues to be, made to the service.
We still have a long way to go to reach where we want and need
to be, but our improvement plan and the hard work of our staff to
deliver that, is ensuring we are heading in the right direction.
Norfolk County Councils Adult Education Services spring courses
are available to browse and book online now at www.norfolk.gov.
uk/adulteducation, with the first classes starting in January at venues
across the county.

Cromer Pier Toilets win

National Title
Refurbished toilets win beaches category
North Norfolk District Councils refurbished toilets on Cromer Pier
have won a national award in the beaches category of the 2015 Loo
of the Year Awards.
The Loo of the Year awards feature an inspection process covering
criteria including signage, decor, maintenance, fixtures, fittings,
cleanliness and overall management and customer care.
The Cromer Pier toilets were refurbished following severe damage
incurred during the destructive storm of December 2013. The toilets
feature energy saving lighting and dementia friendly signage. The
beaches category covers public or privately owned toilets within 50
metres of the shoreline.
The Cromer toilets were refurbished by Thrower & Rutland and
designed by SMG Architects of Sheringham the same team
responsible for toilets in Happisburgh and Sheringham which have
also been recognised at the same awards in previous years.
Cabinet Member for Assets Cllr John Rest said: All of those
involved in the design and upkeep of these toilets are to be
congratulated, including our contractors.
Its a team effort to maintain the consistent quality of a site which
is open to the North Sea elements.
A range of National and UK awards were announced and presented
at the 2015 Loo of the Year Awards at the St Johns Hotel in Solihull
on Friday 4th December.

F.A.I.T.H ANIMAL RESCUE

NOT
THE
SPOT
THE
CRAB,
CRAB.

For animals in trouble theres Hope

I drove to the rescue centre just behind Hickling on the first of

Jan.
The centre has been helping animals for over twenty years.
Here I met Jackie a member of the very busy team, who clean,
feed and care for the animals.
(More volunteers are always welcome, phone for a chat to see if
you can help walk the dogs, cuddle the cats etc).
I was taken to meet some of the twelve puppies they have there at
present, awaiting forever loving homes, there are animals waiting
to come in when FAITH reopens for admissions on the 4 Jan
2016
They were all bouncing bundles of squirming joy ( my excuse for
the poor photos)
Then on to meet Asia a lovely, though rather timid Labrador
crossbred of about four years old, with eyes which are hard to
resist
The animals are all neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped, defleaed and wormed prior to being re-homed
If you wish to adopt one of the centres animals there are a few
formalities and checks, plus a reasonable donation to cover the
centres expenses is expected
Have a look at the website faithanimalrescue.co.uk then email or
phone 01692 598312
I was struck by the wide range of work done here and the
dedication and it should be said cost, of caring for all these
animals along with their other work
F.A.I.T.H is a local charity which relies on the generosity of the
people of Norfolk. Many however who see flyers for events or
fund raising may find it hard to distinguish between them and
the myriad of other Fine Charities. My visit to F.A.I.T.H left
me in no doubt as to the love and practical care that they offer.
Also with so many ways you can help, be it donations or holding
your own fundraiser, volunteering at the centre or attending their
great events its not just about putting your hand in your pocket.
Putting your hand in your pocket is great too.
Mottos are commonplace but these Guys take theirs very
seriously,

MIND THE MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness has become the latest trend within the health sector, Im sure many of you
have heard it mentioned at some point either on the television, frequently mentioned in the
papers and it certainly has become prolific within the glossy magazines most recently the
Mail on Sunday.
What is mindfulness and how does it relate to our daily lives never mind (no pun intended)
our health needs? I feel its helpful to have a bit of background to where this concept comes
from.
Originally Mindfulness formed and indeed continues to form part of the Tibetan approach
to meditation and is an integral part of Buddhist philosophy. For a Buddhist mediation is the
greatest gift we can give ourselves, it offers us away to discover our true nature, to nurture a
positive sense of self and a greater depth of spiritual understanding depending on your own
personal beliefs.
Of course for a Buddhist; meditation has a broader definition than Ive offered here and there
are many books and articles available for anyone who wishes to explore further, however for
today we are focusing on mindfulness.
In a few words mindfulness is bringing the mind back home, taking all those scattered
thoughts and that constant chattering and slowly calming it down so you can then become
grounded and develop a greater sense of yourself.
Heres seaside analogy that might make it clearer:
Imagine your mind as an ocean and each wave a thought. Sometimes stormy with wave after
wave, (thought after thought), crashing along and sometimes into each other, sometimes not
so stormy but with wave after wave rolling along. Mindfulness moves us to a point where the
ocean becomes like a still pond where every now and then a ripple slowly and calmly crosses
it with hardly a disturbance.
With so much stress in our lives today, the constant pressure of a faster pace of life, being
able to slow ourselves down can bring health benefits on many levels both physical and
emotional. As a Psychotherapist mindfulness is an important part of my work in helping
people to understand their mental processes and develop ways to better manage their issues
and emotions that may be causing them pain.
In a practical sense mindfulness can prepare us for the on-going challenges of life by helping
us to answer the question;
How do I feel today?
With the right guidance and application it allows us to ground ourselves in the moment
and orientate our energies to immediate needs rather than using up our time with concerns
of perceived future concerns whether real or imagined that can often lead us to negative
thoughts and feelings and in turn the physical tiredness that results from this.
Now the health and safety bit; with right application mindfulness is an effective tool to daily
care and can have a revitalising effect for our whole being and so our daily life. However
mindfulness can also bring about the experience of unexpected thoughts and feelings which
can be a jolt to the individual. Past or forgotten memories can arise unexpectedly and for
some this can be a traumatic and even harmful experience.
I would advise anyone interested in learning mindfulness to develop a robust understanding
of what it is and where possible to work with someone knowledgeable within this area as
psychological exploration can be a wonderful but powerful experience and having the right
support is invaluable.
On the 14th January at 10am I will be holding a free introductory talk on Mindfulness at the
Pilgrims Way Community Hall in Trimingham all welcome.
On the 28th January I will be running a workshop on Mindfulness and its relationship to
Mind, Body & Spirit (Venue to be confirmed).
If you wish to contact me about anything in todays article or the events I will be running
please drop me a line or give me call.

ONE FOR ALL AND ALL

FOR ONE

Aldborough Players are again set to battle the

winter blues its their own take on The Three
Musketeers (and DArtagnan) with performances
at Aldborough Community Centre from the 3rd
to the 6th February. Whilst not a traditional
pantomime, this will be a fun look at links
between Norfolk and the French royal family.
The script writer, and director, is James Green,
who lives locally and works a teaching assistant
at Aldborough School. James left college,
and, seeing a number of his friends migrate to
university, decided he needed new experiences
in his locality. He appeared in the Panto last
year and joined the Management committee for
the Community Centre. The Panto whetted his
appetite, setting him off upon writing this years
script, which will have a cast of 25, including a
number of young people from ten years upward,
It is very much a family affair with his dad,
Duncan, and sister Maisie on stage in the
production, and with his mum. Sharon having the
daunting task of fitting the cast with their period
costumes.
Tickets are on sale from the 4th January at the
Village Shop and Post Oce, from 5 to 7, half
price for children. Please come along and have
