GRAMMAR VI

TOPIC:
IN CASE

NAME:
PATRICIO CASTILLO

2015-2016

IN CASE
We use in case to say why somebody does or does not something and we also use in
case to express that we are doing something in preparation for something which might
happen.
E.g.: Take an umbrella in case it rains!

We use just in case for a smaller possibility:

I do not think it will rain, but I will take an umbrella just in case it rains
E.g.: In case of fire, leave the building as quickly as possible.

We do not use will after in case. Use a present tense for the future

E.g.: I will leave my cellphone switched on in case Jane calls

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IN CASE AND IF

We use in case to talk about precautions we will take before a problem happens. We use
if to talk about what we will do after a problem happens.
We are going to insure the shipment in case the goods get damaged in transit.
(We will take our insurance first; the problem may or may not happen afterward.)
If the goods get damaged in transit, we'll make a claim.
(The damage may happen, and we will make a claim afterward.)
We will buy some more food in case Tom comes
(Perhaps Tom will come; we will buy some more food now, whether he comes or not;
then we will already have the food if he comes)
We will buy some more food if Tom comes
(Perhaps Tom will come; if he comes, we will buy some more food; if he does not
come, and we wont buy any more food)

IN CASE OF
In case of is not the same as in case. We use in case of to say what we should do if or
when something happens.
E.g.: In case of fire, leave the building as quickly as possible.
(If there is a fire, leave the building.)

IN CASE + Past
We can use in case + past to say why somebody did something
Example: I drew a map for Rose in case she had difficulty finding my house.
