Topic: State of Education in Hampton Bays - School

Presentations, Board of Education Candidates
Speakers: Lars Clemensen, Financial Administrator Larry Luce, HB HS Science
Teacher Dr. Stephanie Forsberg, students Annika Kennedy and Alicia Golyski,
and Board of Education candidates Warren Booth, Mike Dunn, and Liz Scully.
After the Pledge of Allegiance, Lars Clemensen and Larry Luce presented the
proposed budget stating that it would not be final until April 22, 2015. Highlights

Final Budget $5,339,300
Increase in aid for 2014 to 2015 is 8.6%, up from $4.915M
State Aid represents $0.11 of every $1.00 spent in HB
Property Taxes
Property tax levy cap for Hampton Bays = 1.6%
Fourth year in a row we are UNDER the tax cap
Residents will be eligible for Governor Cuomos rebate
*as far as school taxes are concerned
Final proposal will be considered by BOE on Wednesday.
The proposed budget is $49,295,343 or a 2.1% increase.

Board of Election Candidates: Three candidates were introduced and


provided a brief overview of their skills and qualifications.
Warren Booth Six years on the Board of Education and a long-term
employee of the HB Water District.
Mike Dunn Owner of a constructions company, President of HB
Concerned Citizens, Co-chair of HB Citizen Advisory Committee, member
of HB Exploratory Committee for downtown Hampton Bays.
Liz Scully Lengthy HB PTA involvement.
Science Presentation - Dr. Forsberg, project leader, provided an overview of the
work of the Robotics team. This is the second year of this program costing
$5,000 funded by the school budget and fundraising. Students are vetted and if
selected, select any topic they wish to research. The criterions reviewed are:
science grades, SRI scores, academic recommendations, and an essay. They
earn SUNY college credits and are mentored by college level professors. The
program currently has 18 students, 4-5 per grade level.
Alicia Golyski, presented her research in the Baboon Grooming Reciprocation
Benefits.
Annika Kennedy presented her research in Unlocking the Future: Stem Cells.
Annika recognizes the power of stem cells to cure certain diseases. She wishes
to ensure a sufficient supply. She wishes to devise a mechanism for duplicating
and growing stem cells in large quantities so that hospitals and medical facilities
have access to stem cell banks.
Andy Godfrey provided information about the HBCA scholarship of $1,000.
Applicants must write an essay with their thoughts on where Hampton Bays in
going in the future. Deadline is May 22.
Maria Hultz spoke of the scholarship offered by the organization, Beneath the
Sea, for students k-12. They have recently expanded the number of
scholarships to six for a total of $6,500. They cover various topics of interest
such as photography and marine science careers such as environmental
conservation. The application are available online at www.beneaththesea.org.
