"Britain, slavery and the trade in enslaved Africans" Institution Historical Research May
2007
Tobacco was the first cash crop that embraced slavery. Slavery became the society
and economy of the southern colonies. British merchants carried thousands of slaves
from Africa to the southern colonies to work in the tobacco fields. The slaves growing
tobacco increased the southern colonies production. This resource was necessary for
the section on where I explain what and why the slaves were needed/used.

Colonists needed laborers to work for them in the new world. To obtain the slaves they
traded English goods for them. In order to get the slaves some Africans resorted to
kidnapping gangs in which they kidnapped other Africans to be later traded for
goods. The slaves mostly consisted of prisoners or those who have been captured.
This resource play a big role in my website where I needed it's information to do
what and why the slave trade is and why slaves were needed.

The education of slaves was banned/prohibited. Most of the slaves which consist of
plantations slaves lived in small shacks with a dirt floor with little to no furniture. Slaves
were also not allowed to assemble with a white person present. Slaves were held as

incompetent always treated unfairly resulting in slaves complaining about it as well. This
source help on what encounters the slaves faced and how unfairly they were treated.

The labor intensive agriculture of the new world demanded a large workforce to farm
tobacco. Cash crops needed an unlimited and inexpensive supply of fit, capable
people. Each slave that was traded was usually equivalent to 14 pounds of English
goods. This source helped explain why the slaves were needed and explain the slave
trade.

I was in the library and I wanted to know what the slaves faced during the slave trade.
Since the slave trade was very historical I found it. I wanted to know what hardships they
had to deal with on and after the slave boat. This resource played a crucial role in my
encounter section explaining how it connects and what they had faced during the slave
trade.

While conducting my research I needed more information on what the slave trade was.
Luckily there was more than enough information on what it was that I got all the info I
needed. This database gave me information that included how many slaves were traded for
annually and what the slave trade was. This resource was critical in explaining what the
slave trade was and in the background.

I used this encyclopedia to further get more information on why the colonists/English
men needed slaves in the first place what kind of slaves they traded with. This resource
gave me enough info that helps explains why the colonists/English men needed slaves and
what types of Africans are used as slaves such as prisoners and those who are caught.

During my research I needed more information on what the slaves encountered/faced to
further explain how the slave trade connects to encounter. I relied on this website that gave
me the info on what conditions slaves were in on slave ships and how they were treated on
the ships. This resource was key in completing the section of "encounter".

for. There was lots of information on what they were used for which finished up the last
piece of background. This resource was essential in completing my final background piece
