Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy Tuesday! It seems that winter is beginning to find its way into our area.
I wanted to remind families though that if the weather gets bad, please look
to local media outlets for information on school schedules. If we are cancelled
or delayed, this information will be broadcasted on local television, radio,
social networks and the JCPS website. Many of the local television stations
have a ticker underneath that broadcasts just JCPS and will inform viewers if
JCPS is open, closed, or delayed. Please look for this information if the
weather gets bad. I certainly hope we dont have as many snow or cold days
this year as we have had the last few years!
The school year keeps moving and grooving as we are now a few weeks into
our 3rd grading period. To better help families, I am attaching a Whats Going
On in Mrs. Schmidts Class section to our newsletter. While the primary focus
of our weekly newsletter is to inform families of things happening in our class,
I feel I have neglected to inform families of whats happening academically.
Sorry folks! Please look to the Whats Going On section for information
related to our academic content and expectations.
Lastly, it has come to my attention that there was an issue with the online
homework last week. The homework that was created was not actually
opened online for students to utilize. I have decided that the math, reading
and social studies homework from last week will count for homework this
week. If your child already did then kudos! They wont have homework this
week! If they didnt complete it, then they will have homework this week.
Remember to visit our class weebly at http://rockstar5thgraders.weebly.com/.
I have already posted this newsletter to the class website. You can use the QR
code below to access the website as well.
Thank you and have a fabulous week!

Whats going on in Mrs. Schmidts class?

Literacy: Last week we began a unit on the text The Sign of the Beaver. This unit will encompass
reading standards RL.5.3, RL.5.5, RL.5.6, RL.5.7, RL.5.9, & L.5.5.
Math: We will finish standard 5.NF.7 which is division with fractions. We will begin 5.MD.5a,
5.MD.5b & 5.MD.5c which is volume. I anticipate we will spend around 8-9 days on all 5.MD.5
standards.
Social Studies: Students will complete their unit on Westward Expansion and begin their unit on
Settling in the West.
Writing: Students are continuing to work on 90 minute On-Demand prompts. Students will complete a
full 90 minutes writing prompt this week and truly feel the crunch time within this assignment.

If your child has screen time, a GREAT game to play is Oregon Trail. It forces students to utilize
knowledge of math, social studies, and consumerism. It is an old-school 1990 version but it is a great
tool for students! It has can be found at https://archive.org/details/msdos_Oregon_Trail_The_1990
