According to a cost calculator, the rate per kilowatt if you loan the solar panels for 15
years, the rate is $0.09. You also have to pay $200 monthly on top of that for the loan. If
you rent the solar panels for 25 years, the rate becomes $0.12 and the monthly fee
remains the same. The electricity made by the solar panels are currently $0.70 per watt.
This means that it costs you 70 cents to get 1 watt of electricity.
Solar Panels
Solar panels are the most significant of all the solar energy equipment. They are needed
to harness the energy that is being generated by the sun to produce the power.
Batteries
Another piece of solar energy equipment is the battery, which is designed to discharge
and recharge energy countless times on a given day. So if the sun isnt shining the battery
storage will provide consistent power supply. Solar batteries are recommended as they
are designed to be charged and discharged repeatedly.
Charge Controller
In high sun exposure the voltage produced by the solar panels has the potential to
damage the batteries. Solar energy equipment to prevent overcharging a charge
controller is required to regulate the charge, ultimately increasing battery life and
performance.
Power Inverter
A power inverter is solar energy equipment needed unless on battery power exclusively.
There are two uses for a power inverter, one is to convert low voltage DC to the 120 volts
AC needed for appliances, the other is to charge batteries if connected to a utility grid or
an AC Generator.

1. Despite temporary drops in the price of oil and natural gas, utility companies
continue to increase electric rates.3 Over time, fossil fuels will continue to be limited,
further driving the costs up.
2. The cost of solar panels is falling, down almost 100 percent since 1977 (see chart)
and more than 50% since 2007 alone.4
3. Installation costs are falling as well, as more solar providers enter the market to meet
growing demand.
Federal, state and local incentives push costs down even further. Currently, homeowners can
take advantage of a 30 percent federal tax credit now through 2016. Even if the credit falls to
10 percent with no additional rebates after 2016 as some predict, solar comes out ahead of
grid electricity in most of the U.S. as shown in this map. 5
So why wait? Solar is ready now, and your savings start immediately.
