Rise Time Budget

Rise Time
• Total rise time depends on:
– Transmitter rise time (ttx)
– Material Dispersion ∆t = M. ∆λ.L (tmat)
– Modal dispersion rise time (tmod)
• Receiver rise time (trx)

Modal Dispersion Rise Time

Material Dispersion Rise Time ∆t (or tmat) = M. ∆λ.L

tsys = [t2tx + t2rx + M2. ∆λ2.L2 + tmod]1/2

Bit rate
For NRZ Coding Bmax = 0.7/tsys

For RZ Coding Bmax = 0.35/tsys

Example
The LED in a silica optical fiber link has a
rise time of 8nS and a spectral width of 40nm
at an operating wavelength of 840nm. The
PIN photodetector has a rise time of 10nS.
For silica M = 95.2 ps/(nm.km). For a 2.5Km
link, the intermodal dispersion of graded
index fiber is 3.5nS/Km. Calculate the system
rise time and data rate that the system can
support for NRZ coding and RZ coding.
Rise time of source = 8nS
Rise time of Detector = 10nS

Material dispersion
∆tmat = 95.2 X 40 X 2.5 = 9.52nS

∆tmod = 3.5 X 2.5 = 8.75nS

tsys = [82 + 102 + 9.522 + 8.752]1/2nS = 18.2nS

Bit rate
For NRZ Coding Bmax = 0.7/tsys

Bmax = 0.7/18.2nS = 38.46Mb/s

For RZ Coding Bmax = 0.35/tsys

Bmax = 0.35/18.2nS = 19.23Mb/s

Using Single Mode Fiber

tsys = [82 + 102 + 9.522]1/2nS = 15.95nS

Bit rate
For NRZ Coding Bmax = 0.7/tsys

Bmax = 0.7/15.95nS = 43.88Mb/s

For RZ Coding Bmax = 0.35/tsys

Bmax = 0.35/15.95nS = 21.94Mb/s

Using Single Mode Fiber with LASER

Material dispersion
∆tmat = 95.2 X 1 X 2.5 = 0.238nS

tsys = [82 + 102 + 0.2382]1/2nS = 12.8nS

Bit rate
For NRZ Coding Bmax = 0.7/tsys

Bmax = 0.7/12.8nS = 54.68Mb/s

For RZ Coding Bmax = 0.35/tsys

Bmax = 0.35/12.8nS = 27.34Mb/s
