NORWEGIAN COURSES
SPRK
NORWEGIAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Our intensive Norwegian courses are open to all
participants over 18 years. We run courses all year round
at different hours. It is advisable to take a placement test
before signing up to a course in order to be plced on the
correct level.
The Norwegian courses concentrate on communicative competence,
where participants quickly and effectively acquire the knowledge they
need to communicate both orally and in written Norwegian. A prerequisite for the courses is that the participant understands the Latin alphabet
and can write at a normal tempo. It is also important that participants
set aside enough time for their studies and can work in an effective and
independent way.
zz Teaching will be active and communicative.
zz Teaching is performed in the target language.
zz Lessons will consist of both oral and written activities. Oral activities

may include: pair-work, group-work, problem-solving, individual

work and role-play.
zz Homework will be discussed in the lesson, as will many of the

pronunciation and listening exercises from the workbook.
zz The courses are intensive, so there will be a substantial amount of
homework.
zz We recommend that participants set aside time to write at least one

written piece per week, usually one per chapter.
omework will consist of working with vocabulary in the textbook (with
H
help from the glossary in the teaching materials), listening to a cd containing texts from the textbook, working with written pieces, completing
exercises in the workbook and working with interactive exercises on the
books associated website.
L essons taken at Folkeuniversitetet st are accepted for Permanent
working permits, given by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration
(UDI). The number of required lessons varies for different groups of
immigrants according to current Norwegian laws. Lessons taken after the
date of the first working permit given by the authorities are valid for this
purpose. Lessons taken before that are not accepted by the Norwegian
Directorate of Immigration (UDI).
I n principle, the courses dont prepare the candidate for a particular exam,
but:
zz After Norwegian course pre-intermediate level, the participant can

take Sprkprve 2
zz After Norwegian course intermediate level part 2, the participant can

take Sprkprve 3.
zz After the Preparation course for Bergenstesten participants can take

Bergenstesten Test of Norwegian Advanced Level.
We reserve the right to make changes.

CLASSES: All classes have between
12 and 18 participants. The teaching is
aimed at adults.
TEACHERS: All of our teachers are
(or have the equivalent competency of)
native speakers and have the relevant
background to teach Norwegian as a
foreign language.
COURSE CERTIFICATE: All participants who have attended 75% of the
lessons, i.e. at least 9 of the 12 days,
will receive a course certificate from
Folkeuniversitetet. We can, on request,
confirm the number of lessons a participant has attended the course if it is less
than 75%.
CANCELLATION: Cancellation must
be in writing no later than 2 weeks
before the course start.

tempo of the course is high, and it is expected
that all participants can use a monolingual
Norwegian dictionary with Norwegian explanations, and use the glossary with Norwegian
synonyms in the back of the textbook. There is
unfortunately no glossary translated into other
languages that accompanies the book.

This grammar course will give you a good summary of the
base structures in the Norwegian language.
Every course evening you will be introduced to one or more grammatical
skills, for example nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, prepositions and
sentence structure. Tasks will be given in relation to each topic. The activities are based on a variety of tasks that both repeat and deepen each
topic. The learning methods are individual tasks, working in pairs, group
work and reviewing topics as a class.

- GRAMMAR (B2)
This is a specialised course in grammar for adults with
Norwegian as a second language. The course is particularly suited for those who are required to write correct
Norwegian in professional settings.
Each course evening will introduce one or more grammar skills; verbs,
prepositions, sentence structure, dialects and nynorsk. There is always
room for discussions in the group. Tasks and homework will be given in
relation to the topics. The main task will be written activities. Participants
can write 4-5 texts of different types that are submitted to the teacher and
returned with comments via the online learning platform Its Learning.
The learning methods of the course are individual work, working in pairs,
group work, reviewing topics as a class and discussion.

- PRONUNCIATION (B2)
Are you pretty good in Norwegian, but struggle to be
understood by Norwegians?
This pronunciation course is systematically built up and addresses the
key problems in spoken Norwegian language, such as intonation, vowel
length, pronunciation of individual sounds and emphasis. The course
has a practical focus with voice exercises and the use of realistic dialogue
combined with songs, poetry and rhymes. You will receive training in
making and recognising Norwegian sounds through physical exercises in
the form of individual training, pair work and roleplay. You will work also
with the ability to say longer speeches with conviction and confidence.
