Draft of Internship Objectives LIS 5823
Denise Johnson and I met on January 15, 2016 and discussed the internship
objectives as outlined below in the OU-MLIS internship policy and
procedures document.
1. To give the student an opportunity to apply the principles and
theories of library and information studies in an outstanding
library/information center.
This internship will allow me to have a hands-on experience in applying the
principles and theories that I have learned in my OU MLIS course work. I
will be able to observe how students learn and apply information. I will be
observing different learning styles and the techniques that Denise uses to
teach students.
This internship will provide me with skills that I will be able to use in the
future to assist students in becoming effective users of ideas and
information. My observations will help me learn how to empower students
to think critically, and also how to use information in an ethical way.
2. To enable the student to supplement knowledge in his/her area of
specialization through hands-on experience in a library/information
center.
While Denise introduces the students to the library lesson, I will be available
to help check in materials and at the same time, listen to her teach the lesson
for the day.
I will assist students who need help with overrides on their account, mend
and cover books, shelve books, and help students locate books on shelves.
I will assist in weeding books by applying the principals I learned in
Collection Development.

I will also be able to assist in making notations on Destiny catalog records as

needed. This would be especially helpful with the teacher literacy kits.
I will observe how she integrates new technologies such as the Smart Board
and YouTube videos to teach library skills.
I will also learn how Denise teams with teachers at Wolf Creek, to create and
present lessons.
I hope to encourage not only enthusiastic readers, but reluctant readers as
well.
I will create a weekly blog to share what I am learning and post it on my
portfolio.
3. To provide a liaison between the School of Library and Information
Studies and the states library/information center community.
Denise and I discussed the Oklahoma PASS Objectives for libraries and how
these are met at Wolf Creek Elementary Library. She explained that the
objectives that Broken Arrow uses are different than the state of Oklahoma,
but they may be changing. She teaches the objectives in context with other
themes. Denise has offered to share her computer files that she uses to teach
the BA PASS objectives for each grade level. She will offer advice on how
to meet library accreditation standards.
We also discussed Encyclomedia, and the importance of this statewide
conference that Oklahoma has annually for librarians.
I asked Denise about the State tests that I will need to take to obtain my
certificate. Denise was a former educator, so she did not have to take the
same tests that I will have to take to become alternatively certified.
She will be able to advise me on the methods used by Oklahoma school
librarians on how to manage an effective school library.
4. To give the student experience in evaluating a particular job situation
I believe that the internship at Wolf Creek Elementary Library will help me
evaluate whether I want to pursue a career as a public school librarian.

Denise Johnson has been a certified media specialist for ten years and she is
very willing to share her knowledge with me. I will be able to learn many
skills and tips under her careful and knowledgeable guidance.

I will be working every Friday the spring semester of 2016. This schedule
may need to be adjusted a few times to allow for the birth of my twin
grandbabies in Little Rock AR in February, and also the marriage of my
youngest son in mid-May. I will try to make up extra days during the book
fair which is the week before Spring Break (Mar 9, & 10th). If that is not
possible, I will find another time to make them up.
