What REal Love Looks Like

Love is in the air! Red and pink hearts are everywhere, which is very fitting
since preschoolers will be talking about Buckets of Love this month.
Not an artificial check yes, no or maybe love but an unending lovethe
love of Jesus! Jesus loves everyone. Not just the prettiest, the sweetest or
the smartest, but everyone, and we are all called to do the same.
This month our memory verse is from John 15:12, Love each other as I
have loved you. Lets spread the lovethe love of Jesus!
For God so loVed the world,
That He gAve

Believeth In Him
Should Not perish
But have Everlasting life.

Elementary Focus: Learning Cooperation

When you have a job to get done, you need the right tool. Hammers and screwdrivers work great for doing
the jobs they were designed for, but sometimes you need something a little more complex. You need a
tool that has the right attachment for the job, one that cooperates with that tool to get the job done.
Like a drill. Without the right drill bit to do the work, its just a noisy paperweight. Or a ratchet. Without
the right socket, well, I guess youve got a shiny little hammer, maybe? Its just not useful unless you
have both parts working together.
Thats cooperationworking together to do more than you could do alone. When you think about it,
cooperation is huge. When you cooperate, you can build more. You learn more. You can do more.
As kids are growing, they become more aware of the people around them. They have friends on the
playground or in their neighborhood. They have to work in teams to finish projects in school. If they dont
learn Gods plan for cooperation, theyll have a difficult time getting along with people.
God designed us as human beings not only to need each other, but also to need Him. Now, its not like
God was up in heaven desperate for some help, so He made us. No, God is all-sufficient. But, He created
us so we could have a relationship with Him, and so that we could participate in His work together. In
other words, God put all of us together on this planet to do more together than we could ever do alone,
and in some caseswith His helpto do things that might even seem un-doable.
How can we cooperate with God on His plan to change the world?

Lex Kids currently provides sponsorships for two children. Rose, who lives
in the Philippines is nine, and Ricardo is a ten year-old from Haiti.
Our monthly support provides:
Medical checkups, which often save lives
Nutritious food
Health and hygiene training

Educational assistance
Access to special services like surgeries and disaster relief
Mentoring to help children discover their incredible value as Gods children
Most important of all, our sponsored children will hear about Jesus Christ and be encouraged to develop a
life-long relationship with God.
So, this month our Lex Kids will be getting to know these two
sweet kids and investing in their lives through cards and letters
of encouragement. If you would like more information on child
sponsorship through Compassion International, please visit
their website at compassion.com.

meeting is Monday, February

sharing with us about Christian
persecution.
Our
missions
action item is to bring any
sort of donation for LICS. This
can be canned or boxed food
items, gently-used clothing, new
toiletries, etc.

its all about obedience: but why?

When you get down to it, theres a God who created us and desires
a relationship with us, but the functionality of that relationship
hinges on OBEDIENCE on our part. Here is where the cart and horse
thing comes into play: when your obedience to the commands of
God as spelled out in His Holy Word is a legalistic means to an end
Gods blessings and to escape damnation, your RELATIONSHIP with God will not be at all be what He
desires for you. In this condition, you are really still in control of your life and destiny, or so you think
and act. Yet, when you have a RELATIONSHIP with God based upon the love He has shown you, in which
you understand that He gave His Son to save you from death and destruction and has delivered you,
then your OBEDIENCE becomes your greatest desire because there is no greater way to show your love
to Him! In this condition, you have given up your rights and you are not in control of your own destiny
God is in control of your life and your death. Only in that position can you truly know what it is to have a
RELATIONSHIP with the Father.
Its a little bit like the different kinds of relationships that can exist between an earthly parent and a
teenager. Some teens obey their parents rules very reluctantly and begrudgingly. They are strong-willed
and defiant, and they definitely want to maintain control of their own lives. Others are much more
obedient, but have found security and happiness in submission to authority and would never want to do
anything that would displease their parents.
How would you describe your RELATIONSHIP with God the Father? Do you feel there are rules you have
to obey but would rather not? Or do you feel you get to obey the Father and desire nothing else but to
please Him? The answer to finding a powerful and daily RELATIONSHIP with God has everything to do
with our daily submission to Him and His commands. This is why Jesus said in Luke 9:23, If any of you
wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.
So what does this have to do with music? You have been commanded by our God to sing! Over and over
we see this in the Bible:
Let us sing psalms of praise to him. Psalm 95:2
I will praise Gods name with singing. Psalm 69:30
Sing joyfully about his glorious acts. Psalm 107:22
Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him! 1 Chronicles 16:9
Sing to the LORD, all the earth. 1 Chronicles 16:23
Serve the LORD with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Psalm 100:2
So how are you going to obey this command? Out of duty and compulsion? May your singing be done out
of love and praise for the God who has saved you! Bottom line: lets be a singing congregation! You can
sing from the pews, but some of you
may feel called to come help lead the
singing from the choir loft! Please pray
about joining the choir! We meet every
Wednesday in the Choir Room at 7 p.m.!

Experiencing Real Love

As you know, February is referred to as the love month! When we think of February, we usually
think of Valentines Day, the day for couples to express their love for one another. I want us to
experience love this month, but instead of celebrating love for one day or just a month, lets
learn how to experience real love every single day.
1 John 1:8 says, God is love Think about that for a minute. Love is defined as God, and God
is love. Now consider 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 which says, Love is patient and kind, love does not
envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its on way; it is not irritable or
resentful. It does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things,
believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, love never ends If we replace the word
love with God, we see how much our Father really loves us. We learn the incredible attributes
of our Lord and how he feels about us.
My point in all this is to say, if you want to love your wife, your children, your friends or even total
strangers more, learn how to love God. I promise you that the more you love God, the more you
will learn how to love the people in your life. To love God more requires more time in his word,
and it will require more time in prayer and scripture memory. Will you accept
the challenge to read Gods word every day during the month of February? If you
already spend time in the word daily, will you be willing to commit an extra ten
minutes a day? I assure you, the more time you spend in the word and with God,
the more love you will have for the Father.

February 6, 2016 marked the conclusion of the 11th season of Upward Basketball at LBC. To
put this in perspective, a first grader who played in our inaugural season is now a junior in high
school. In fact, eight of our referees and scorekeepers are former Upward players, and some
played in the inaugural season. This year we had an impressive 235 basketball players and
cheerleaders participate. A majority of the children were from LBC, but many participants were
from other area churches. One of the most important groups, however, had no church affiliation,
and we welcomed the opportunity to introduce them to Jesus Christ.
Upward Sports Ministries is headquartered in Spartanburg, South Carolina and manages
leagues in 48 states and several foreign countries. In August 2015, three LBC staff members
attended the annual Upward conference in Spartanburg. A league director from Australia was in
attendance, and he won the prize for traveling the greatest distance. This is an example of how
far this ministry reaches across the world.
What makes Upward unique to other sports leagues is that it is built upon a Christian foundation
with an emphasis on developing the childs character and athletic ability. During each weekly
practice, the children are taught life lessons that are based on biblical principles.
In addition to maintaining the continuing partnership with Lexington United Methodist Church,
LBC also welcomed multiple families from Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church to our league
this year. Their Upward program had to be suspended for a year due to ongoing construction on
their campus.
LBC is blessed with great facilities, eager volunteers and thriving relationships with area churches
who devote their time to help our league succeed. In fact, there were a couple of age groups
where we had more volunteers than we needed. Several coaches continue to go above and beyond
what is expected. A few have repeatedly invested their time and resources by ministering to the
players and their families. This includes transportation to and from games and home repairs
to a widows residence. A first-time coach recently told me that he was glad he overcame his
hesitancy and signed up to lead his sons team. After thinking about his comment for a few
seconds, I told him Ive never had a coach tell me they regretted such a decision.
Registration for the 2016-2017 season will begin in September 2016.
Please consider helping with this vital ministry by becoming a coach
or a referee. It will be a rewarding experience for both you and the
children involved. Find out more at lexingtonbaptist.org/upward.

Dear Church Family,

Most of you are aware that during the month of February we will be focusing on prayer. I recently read
an article about prayer by Jonathan Parnell. He says, Prayer is effective, not because of great men who
pray, but because of a great God who in Christ graciously hears his people.
I truly believe that statement. However, I also know that God puts people in positions of
leadership to help us grow in our prayer life and to encourage us to persevere when we
get discouraged. One of those leaders here at LBC is Kay Coker. Kay has been leading
the prayer ministry for many years and has much wisdom to share with our church. I
am very grateful for her leadership, and I appreciate her willingness to share her heart
with us concerning prayer.
Janet Butler
Ministry Assistant, Missions
jbutler@lexingtonbaptist.org

Special Thanks
We are very grateful to Paul
Kent and Linda Lovern for
their leadership in missions
for many years. Paul led a
special prayer gathering on
Sunday afternoons focused on
missions, and Linda was our
Crisis Ministry Coordinator.
They will both continue in
ministry but in other areas
that God has called them to.
Paul and Linda, thank you so
much for your leadership over
the years!
If you are interested in being
involved with Crisis Ministry,
please contact Janet Butler

or at 803.996.8836.

that could benefit from this free car check and oil change,
please share the information with them.
We also need volunteers, not only to perform the oil changes,
but also to help with administrative needs and chat with our
guests while they wait on their vehicles. Email Kevin Barber at
kebarber@windstream.net to volunteer.

A Battle Worth Fighting &

The Weapon Needed to Win the War

In 1996 Lexington Baptist Church made a commitment to be a house
of prayer as commanded by Jesus in Matthew 21:13. During the
month of February, you will have the opportunity to be a part of one
or more of our prayer ministries at LBC. Please take time to review
the opportunities available to you to intervene in history through
your prayers. There is a prayer booth in the lobby all month long.

Prayer is your relationship to Christ. Through the Word we learn about

God and who He is. But it is through prayer that we develop a friendship
with Him. If you want to have a prayer life that makes a difference in your
family, friends, community, state, and/or nation, we want to come alongside you and help you become
one who experiences the power of God through your prayer life!
Never in my lifetime have I felt more compelled to call our church family to seek Gods face in prayer,
both personally and corporately. 2 Chronicles 7: 14 is our instruction from God as to what we must do
when we, the Body of Christ, have left our first love. Each time Israel moved away from God through sin
and disobedience, He called them back into fellowship through the instructions of v. 14.
IF My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn
from their wicked ways, THEN I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Verse 15 goes on to say, Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.
When the Body of Christ humbly confesses their sin the relationship between our Father and the Body
is healed! God so desires to answer our prayers! But He is holy and cannot hear our prayers because of
the separation sin has created. But as soon as we turn (repent) His ears are open and He will move
in power to answer our prayers.
On Tuesday, February 9, from Noon to 1 p.m., Franklin Graham will be praying with Christ followers
from all over our state on the State House grounds as part of his 50 state tour. I believe as Franklin
Graham does that no politician, no government enactment, no military force will push back the darkness that is rapidly enveloping our nation OTHER THAN corporate prayer! Many times in the last year
we have witnessed the attacks on our faith. On February 9, we will have the opportunity to take a stand
as a state to say to the world that as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord! If you would like to
carpool with others from LBC, please meet in the main church parking lot at 10:30 a.m. It will demand
a sacrifice of time and work. And there will be opposition encountered, I am sure. The enemy will not
go without a fight. But our weapons are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds...
and everything that exalts itself against the knowledge of God... (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)
Let us not grow weary, brothers and sisters in Christ! This is a battle worth fighting, and we have THE
weapon to win this war. I look forward to seeing you in Columbia on February 9 and to your one-year
commitment to be a prayer warrior in 2016!
