The History of Motorcycles

By: Sydney Brown and Grayson Watson IED Period 3

A)When was the product invented?

The motorcycle was invented in

1867.

B) What need did the Motorcycle address?

Motorcycle were not as skilled and mastered as they are now, but they were a
lot better than traveling by horse. Motorcycles fulfilled the need of people trying to
get places faster, communicate quicker, and a lighter transportation than a horse.
Motorcycles were especially good during times of war (1902) because soldiers were
able to communicate information quickly. These messengers of war then became
called The Military Police.

C) Who invented the motorcycle?

A New Hampshire native, Sylvester Howard Roper.

E)What materials were originally used to make

the product?
It was made mostly out of wood and the tire spokes are wood.

F) How was the product originally made?

In 1885 Motorcycles were originally made by hand because since these
machines had not been manufactured yet people had to start somewhere by making
prototypes. These prototypes included materials such as wood (used in the bonding
of wheels and frame of bike). Certain engines require different processes to make
therefore it all depended on the bike.

G) What improvements have been made to the

product?
Current motorcycles have better brakes, improved ergonomics for better control and
reduced fatigue and improved reliability. Motorcycles also have better motors
improved for speed. Lastly motorcycles have a more safe design and structure.

H) Why were these improvements made?

These improvements were made for safety purposes because without breaks you
have little time to react to upcoming events. By adding breaks it lessens the risk of
getting in a accident because you can easily stop the motorcycle. By adding better
motors it improved speed which helped people get places faster with motorcycles.
Lastly by motorcycles having a better structure and design it improved the ability to
go certain speeds and by having a better structures motorcycles became just a tad
bit faster.

I) Who uses the product?

People who ride motorcycles.

J) What is the global impact on society of the

invention and subsequent innovations?
Motorcycles over the years have had a huge impact on society especially in low
income areas because they are most definitely cheaper and less expensive for
maintenance. Also motorcycles used of all the motorcycles 58% of them are used in
the Asia Pacific and Eastern Asia region. Motorcycles have not caused as must
pollution as well. Many people who live in larger cities are able to get places faster
due to the bikes capability to move around tight spaces. Motorcycles have been the
start of things such as mopeds.

K) If you had the ability to change this product in

any way. What would you change?
I would give motorcycles the ability to fly.

Engineering Disciplines used to the Development

of the the Motorcycle
Mechanical engineering- I believe that mechanical engineering was used
because a motorcycle is a machine therefore machines are designed by using
mechanical engineering principles.
Automotive engineering- I believe that automotive engineering was used
because a motorcycle is a vehicle therefore the principles of automotive
engineering had to be applied.
Manufacturing engineering- I believe that manufacturing engineering was used
because you had to use these principles to design a way to manufacture and
produce multiple motorcycles. (This could also use Industrial engineering).

Conclusion
1) Define and differentiate invention and innovation- Invention is when you have an idea that you design
and produce a final presentation of something that no one has ever done before. Innovation is when
you innovate or make something better. The differences between the term invention and innovate is
when you invent something it is original but when you innovate something you are taking a invention
that has already been done and adding improvements to it.
2) What were the major factors that contributed to past innovations of the invention that you
researched?- When someone innovated the product they had to think of problems and ways to fix the
problems (brainstorming) then test them and if people liked the new design of the motorcycle it then
would become innovated.
3) How has the pace of development changed through the history of the design?- The pace of
development for the motorcycle depended on how much the product was needed at the time therefore
the development of the product changed on the need for the product?
4) What future innovations to the chosen invention do you predict?- I think future innovations to the
motorcycle will be the ability to fly, stop on its own, or have more than 2 seats.
