To What Extent Do Teenagers Face

Inequality?
Introduction
In my research I wanted to find out to what extent teenagers face
inequality. Youth is seen as a transitional period between childhood and
adulthood. Sociologists believe that youth/teenagers came as their own
distinct group in the 20th century and they have faced inequalities ever
since. Mizen (2002) says that among politicians, policy makers and even
youth researchers there isnt an agreement about the age at which youth
begins and ends. As far as the law is concerned youth could begin at 10
(when you are criminally responsible in England and Wales) and ends
when youre 26 (when you have full benefits).

Methodology
My sample was of 10 people because having a larger sample helps us
understand how more people feel about inequalities. Im going to ask
people the questions then record the data on a data record sheet. Im
going to analyse my results by recording the answers to my results by
recording the answers from my closed questions on a bar graph and for
my open questions I highlighted key comments and responses.

Results
From my results I found out that all of my respondents believe they face
more inequalities at school then at home, also all of the respondents
believe that the inequalities they face are unfair. When the respondents
were asked How do you think we could stop these inequalities? 80% of
respondents said make it as fair as possible 10% of respondents said
let us leave school and the final 10% of respondents said get rid of the
teachers because they think theyre better than us. So overall most
people say we need to make it fairer.
In my Sample I asked 2 boys and 8 girls, this mightve affected my results.

Conclusion
Overall, I found out that most teenagers believe they face more
inequalities at school, also most teenagers think that in order to stop
these inequalities teachers have to start making things fair and allowing
students to do what they do. But even after this research we cant be sure
to what extent teenagers face inequality. To improve the validity of my

results I would have to ask more people from different schools because
they might think that they dont face any inequalities at school but they
face loads at home, so this would affect my results and improve the
validity.

Evaluation
I think the sample I used did affect the outcome of my conclusion because
I only asked 2 boys so the majority were girls, if I had used 5 boys and 5
girls the outcome wouldve been more average because I wouldve got an
even view point of both boys and girls. Also, I couldve asked people from
different areas because there view on inequalities would be different
depending on their upbringing, school, neighbourhood etc.
The most successful thing about my research was my open questions
because I got more information on peoples views whereas on the closed
questions the only views they could give were the options I had given
them to choose from.
If I was going to repeat this research I would change the people I asked
because with the people I asked this time they were all from the same
area and school so the inequalities they think they face in school would all
be the same.
My respondents clearly understood all the Sociological concepts used.
It was useful to complete a pilot study because you got the general idea
on whether or not the respondents would understand the questions and if
the questions were useful to finding out the answer to the main question
(to what extent do teenagers face inequality?).
I didnt have any problems gaining respondents; the problem was getting
the respondents to answer the questions honestly and sensibly.
If I did this research again I would probably use more of an interview style
technique because this time I just gave my respondents the questionnaire
and data record sheet and asked them to fill it in, whereas if I had done an
interview style questionnaire I couldve explained the questions to them
and made sure they fully understood the questions, also if I asked them
the questions and wrote the responses down there would be less chance
of silly answers.
