ThePhylumCoelenterataincludesthepolyps,jellyfishes,seaanemones,andcorals.Allof
theseanimalshaveabodywallconsistingoftwolayersofcells,betweenwhichisajellylike
substance,themesoglea.Withinthebodyisasinglegastrovascularcavity,orcoelenteron.
Becauseofthepresenceoftwocellularlayers,Coelenteratesaresidetohaveatissuelevel
organization.Theyarealsoacoelomatesthatis,theydontpossessasecondbodycavity,the
coelom.

Positioninanimalkingdom
PhylumCnidariaarecharacterizedbyprimaryradialorbiradialsymmetry.Radialsymmetry,in
whichthebodypartsarearrangedconcentricallyaroundtheoralaboralaxis,isparticularly
suitableforsessileorsedentaryanimals.
Thephylumhasnotadvancedgenerallybeyondthetissueleveloforganization,althoughafew
organsoccur.
