Chapter Title: Learning to Read: Understanding the Reading Process

Nursery 1 (Cynthia)
Thinking Within the Text- Summarize- Children acted out the story to
increase memory and awareness of details in story.
Nursery 2 (Gaby)
Thinking Within the Text- Summarize- After reading book teacher
questions important details (characters, setting, problem/solution), modeling
Thinking beyond the text- Predicting- During the reading teacher
stopped to have children predict and make connections
Nursery 4 (Maria)
Thinking About the Text- Critique- Teacher asked questions to
encourage reflection (ie.What was your favorite part of the story and why?)
Thinking Within the text- Summarize- Children look at book and found
details to talk about the book
PK5 (Silvia)
Thinking About the Text-Analyze- Children were encouraged to ask
questions based on observing images in books,
Thinking Beyond the Text- Make connections- Children explored
concepts such as real and not real based off of these observations
PK6 (Amanda)
Thinking Within the Text- Maintain Fluency-Teacher models adjusting
readings for purpose by emphasizing intonations. Children practice by
reading bubbles and using character voices.
Thinking Beyond the Text- Make Connections- Children found
connections between various books by comparing common themes
Thinking Beyond the Text- Predict- Children used common character
elements from books that they had read and then create their own books

Kinder 7 (Patty)
Helping Children Expand Their Thinking- Teacher re-read story in small
group in a new space (resource room) and asked questions from chapter:
What did you notice, What were you thinking, What is happening, etc.
Teacher noticed that the questions helped children analyze, critique, and
make connections
Kinder 8 (Sarah)
Thinking Beyond the Text- Make Connections- During reading, teacher
made connections to real world information.
Thinking Beyond the Text- Synthesize- After reading teacher asked
questions about their current knowledge and their new knowledge
PK-K 8 (Karla S.)
Teacher used a bird encyclopedia and a Mo Willums pigeon book...
Thinking Within the Text- Seach for and Use Information- Children
looked at fiction and non-fiction books about pigeons and compared images
to seek information.
Thinking Within the Text- Monitor and Correct- Children brought books
to tables and attempted reading using memory
Thinking About the Text- Critique- Children painted their favorite part of
a book
Thinking About the Text- Analyze- Children made comparison of fiction
and nonfiction books
Thinking Beyond the Text- Synthesize- Children compared previous
knowledge to new knowledge
PK 9 (Karla R)
Thinking About the Text- Analyze- Teacher led a discussion to explore
the various points of view in a text.
Kinder 10 (Laura)
Thinking Beyond the Text- Make Connections- The children expressed
empathy for a character of a book by relating it to their real lives
Thinking About the Text- Analyze- Teacher asked child to draw their
favorite part of the book

Spanish (Alondra)
Thinking Within the Text- Solve Words- Teacher led a discussion of how
to solve words that you dont know. She suggested to ask someone for help
or look on the internet, etc.

Thinking Within the Text- Maintain Fluency- Teacher modeled how to


read with Intonation
Thinking Beyond the Text- Making Connections- Teacher read a book
about the beach and asked children to relate after having returned from
school vacations.
Thinking Beyond the Text- Predict- Teacher asked children to look at the
pictures before reading and children could predict the story based on the
images.
Thinking About the Text- Analyze- Teacher led activity where children
shared their observations and opinions, comparing various books
