Preparing for Worship

February 7, 2016
Worship services at 8:30 and

Dave is retir10:45 a.m.

a.m
ing his seat at
Fifth Sunday after epiphany
the sound booth
Louisenie desauguste
in worship, (a
seat he has ocScripture: Luke 9.28-36 (37-43)
cupied since the
downtown days!) After months of hinting
that it was time for us to find a replacement, we have finally allowed him to pass the
baton to a new team of sound booth operators (note that it takes a whole team to replace one Dave!) which might give him a chance to actually sit with his family during
worship!
Will you help us say Thank You in a big way? Join us on Feb. 3 for our usual
Wednesday meal, but following that at about 6:40, we will share stories of all the happy
ways Dave has made coming to FBC better for all of us! In the meantime, be sure to
say thanks to Dave when you see him for his years (make that decades) of service to
First Baptist. We are forever indebted to him for his commitment.

Martha Stearns Marshall Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016

First Baptist Church of Lawrence has a long and proud
history of supporting Gods gifts for ministry in women.
We support women and men seeking to embrace Gods call
in preaching, teaching, leading, praying, playing music, and
the myriad other ways God works in our lives and congregations. One way we as a church celebrate Gods call on
women in ministry is to welcome women outside our own
pastoral staff to our pulpit as guest preacher. On February
7, we welcome Louisenie Desaugust (Dezo) to share
through proclamation. Dezo is currently enrolled in the
MDiv program at Central Baptist Theological Center with a
dream to return to her home country of Haiti to serve
those in need.
Since 2007, Baptist Women in Ministry has invited churches to ask a woman to
preach during February in honor of Martha Stearns Marshall, an 18th century Baptist
woman who preached alongside her husband.

Lenten Lunch Study, beginning February 17
On Wednesdays during Lent (February 17 March 23), there will be a BringYour-Own-Lunch study/experience, Soul Tending, beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the
Judson Room. The scripture that will be our base in Philippians 2:5-11. The same
study/experience will be offered as our Lenten Wednesday night experience, as
well.
Since Lent is traditionally a time of self-reflection and spiritual growth, the
experiences and study provided will be a time (margins!) in which your relationship with God can grow. In part, you will be invited to try on various spiritual
exercises.

Whatever Happened to That Church Cookbook?

It's still coming, we promise! Look for it after Easter, just
in time for post-Lenten splurges to celebrate the risen
Christ!

Something New for Parents of Youth!

The Shelter of Each Other (by Mary Pipher, PhD) offers insights into parenting in todays
world. We will be basing a parent study on this book.
February 7 and 21 the topic will be Media and Advertising, and on February 28 we
will consider Character.
(Because of Spring Break and Easter, we will not meet in March.)
In April, we will discuss the following topics: April 3: Community (including church
community); April 17 and 24: we will share specific ideas, some from the book and
some that the participants will share with each other.
The discussions, the learnings, the practical applications that this study will offer makes
this something you will want to add to your parenting experience.
We will be meeting from 5 6:15 p.m., during the first part of the youth group time.
If you need child care, let Cheryl know by February 3.

College Care Packages

Many thanks to the Blythe Memorial
Fund and to those who donated to the
college care packages in December -they were a tremendous success! We
sent 22 care packages to students as
close as Lawrence, and as far away as
San Jose, CA and Newberg, Oregon.
We've heard back from
many of these students, and
their responses were filled
with surprise and gratitude.
This was a great way to
show our college students
that we care about them! Keep your
eyes peeled in late April, when we'll be
preparing care packages for the spring
semester finals season.
