Contextualisation
You must include within your evaluation how you
made effective changes to your rehearsal schedule
based upon self-critique taken at various stages
during the process. Justify these changes and
elaborate on their success.
You must not only be able to show excellent
personal organisation during the planning stage, but
also be able to recognise the importance of working
harmoniously within a team.
You must be able to use creative thinking if either
you encounter problems that have arisen and need
solving (technical issues perhaps) or if you have
suggested and applied innovative or creative ideas
as to how the performance is presented.
This project requires a professional approach and good understanding of the procedures and
protocols of live performance. Attending live shows, discussing roles and responsibilities with
individuals, working within the industry, and investigating the role of professional bodies and unions
would be advantageous.

This project is designed to develop your skills as an integral member of a musical ensemble. It
will ask you to consider structured rehearsals and to reflect upon progress made. You will assess
appropriateness of a range of venues, and the technical logistics associated with live
performance, and will eventually perform to an audience. Ultimately you will assess the
effectiveness, both personally and the group as a whole, of the process and performance.
You are a member of a function band that has decided to hold a number of charity events. These
events will also act as a showcase for your ensembles repertoire. The band must decide
appropriate material, assess and eventually choose performance venues, plan and promote the
events, and reflect upon he process over a series of band meetings.
TASKS
As a member of an ensemble you must plan at least two public performances (one of
which will be for the Teenage Cancer Trust charity), selecting appropriate material,
and after researching and evaluating a number of music venues, choose the two that
you feel would be most appropriate.
Once you have selected what pieces you are to play, you must develop the
appropriate rehearsal strategies required for shows of this scale. You will need a
good understanding of the different roles and responsibilities of those who work in the
live music industry to effectively contribute to the planning and promotion of your own
shows. You will keep a log of the process.
The shows demand a series of structured rehearsals under musical direction. During
this rehearsal stage of the process you must allow for a series of group sessions for
reflection. These sessions will allow you to assess the effectiveness of the rehearsal
sessions themselves, the direction and guidance you are being shown, and the
choice of repertoire.
A log of this process must show that you can explain what resources and accessories
are required not only for the show, but also for the maintenance of equipment. Your
log must also assess health and safety in rehearsal and performance.
The organisation of the event will require reliability and a professional focus. You
must perform in a number of performances, showing a high level of professionalism
throughout. The performances must demonstrate that you can show a well-rehearsed
level of musicality, whilst keeping appropriate self-presentation.
You will have regular feedback sessions to review your own and your ensembles
progress. There will also be a formal debrief after each performance. You will present
evidence of these meetings in your logbook that will include in detail your personal
reflections.
