CFD analysis of performance and emission parameters during combustion in DICI Engine of

composite (x-x) Bio-diesel

ABSTRACT

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of an existing single cylinder CI engine is

intended to be developed. Present work envisages to deal with design and analysis of this engine
using CFD software.

Computational fluid dynamics, usually abbreviated as CFD , is a branch of fluid mechanics that
uses numerical methods and algorithms to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows.
The basic principle of the CFD modeling method is that the simulated flow region is divided into
small cells within each of which the flow either kept under constant conditions or varies smoothly.
Differential equations of momentum, energy and mass balance are discretized and represented
interms of the variables at the centre of or at any predetermined position within the cells. These
equations are solved iteratively until the solution reaches the desired accuracy.

The primary objectives of the project are to analyze the combustion temperature profile and
emission of CO2 , CO, specific fuel consumption & Brake thermal efficiency. The engine
geometry modeling & meshing process is carried out using Ansys CFD software. Meshed model is
analyzed using Fluent CFD software.

The analyzed results are to be validated against experimental results.
