Adam C.

Post and Lucy Frost Post

This piece of family history is a bit complicated. Adam C. Post was a Union Solider, part of General
Shermans famous march to the sea. Adam was born variously in Missouri, Ohio, and Pennsylvania
(depending on the source), I tend to go with Richland County, Ohio. He first married Isabel Martin.
They had several children, one of whom (Katie) is buried in Salem (Jasper County, MO) Cemetery with
her mother. Katie was born in 1861. The 1880 Census suggests there were at least two other children to
this marriage: Mattie and Charles A., born about 1857 and 1858 respectively. Isabel Martin Post died in
June 1869. I dont know what happened to Mattie but Charles Post married Cora ____ Post and had
several children including Vernon Post (1903-xxxx). Vernon Post lived near the low water bridge on Dry
Fork for many years and was a close friend of the Cases. Vernon married rather late in life and had no
children.
Adam next married Lucy Frost Post, youngest sister of Orville Frost; prominent Jasper County farmer and
also a Union soldier. The Frosts and the Posts were close neighbors northwest of Carthage. Adam was
about fifteen years older than Lucy when they married in January 1871; he is 37, she is not yet 22.
Between 1874 and 1879, Lucy gives birth to five children: Winfred, Margaret, Mary, Mabel and William.
She died at age 30; a few months after her fifth child was born. The last baby, William, died shortly
afterwards. Lucy is buried in Salem Cemetery.
Adam Clark Post married a third time to Eliza (Elizabeth) Rawles in 1885. As far as I know, they had no
children. Eliza died in 1921, she is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Carthage, MO.
The 1880 Census is a bit of a problem as it listed Lucy Post as Arum Posts wife. By this time, Lucy is
already deceased, and Arum Post is a misspelling of Adam Post. Mabel Post is missing from the list of
children, and Isabel Martin and Lucy Frosts children are comingled in the Census family listing.
Adam and Lucys firstborn child was Winfred Bryant Post. Winfred B. became a prominent physician.
He and his wife had a son, Winfred L. Post, who also was a physician, an occulist. Winfred Luscombe
Post became a philanthropist and left a portion of his estate to the Public Library of Joplin Missouri where
the Post Memorial Art Reference Library room can be found. Winfred L. Post had no natural born
children but did adopt two children. Winfred L. Post attended the Frost Family reunions during the 1960s
as he was first cousin once removed.
Adam Clark Post died in 1908 and is buried in Park Cemetery, Carthage, Missouri; his three wives are in
Salem and Oak Hill Cemeteries. However, the Post Family Plot in Park Cemetery shows a marker for an
Elizabeth Post. This is not his third wife, Elizabeth Rawles Post, but his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth
Luscombe Post, wife of Adams son, Winfred Bryant Post. I do not know why Elizabeth Luscombe Post
was buried with her father in law and not her husband.
In places, Lucys children have different names: Winfred is called Fred, Margaret is called Mollie or
Gertrude, and Mary is called Maude.

Note: Since Lucy died in 1879, I can only conclude that the Census was begun in 1879 and completed in
1880, thus the discrepancy in dates. Arum Post should be listed as Adam Post. Also missing is their
daughter Mabel Post, born in 1877. Charles H. Post should be listed as Charles A. Post.

Winfred Luscombe Post was born in Carthage MO.

He graduated from Carthage High School in 1916.
He earned his medical degree from Washington
University in 1922, specializing in disorders of the
eye, ear, nose, and throat. Dr. Post moved to Joplin
MO to begin his medical practice. There he met the
elegant Elizabeth Clark; they married on Nov. 8,
1925.
The young couple shared a common passion for art
history, English architecture and design, and
antiques. Soon after their marriage, they built a
quaint stone cottage at 2630 E. 15th Street in Joplin.
The Posts later added a large wing and a second
story to create a magnificent English Tudor-style
mansion.
Winfred Post was an active civic leader in Joplin's
formative years following the mining boom. During
World War II, he took time off from his medical
practice to serve in the Air Force Medical Division.
The Posts often entertained soldiers from Camp
Crowder in their home.
Winfred and Elizabeth Post were the proud parents
of two adopted children: Elizabeth Robberson
"Missie" Post (1932-1937) and Eleanor Luscombe
"Ellie" Post (1937-1981).
The Posts were generous philanthropists who
actively supported the arts in Joplin. They helped
found the Joplin Historical Society and Spiva Art
Center. They received many awards and honors for
their efforts.
The Posts had planned to leave their house,
furniture, and art collections as a museum. Although
that could not be accomplished, their desires were
fulfilled with the establishment of the Post Memorial

Art Reference Library, 300 Main Street, Joplin MO
