THIS COURSE
RELATED TO THE
CLPNA
COMPETENCY.
PROVIDE AN
EXAMPLE

One significant learning experience I had was regarding dressings

types, wound care, and surgical sites. With the use of my text books
and from attending an open lab, I learned how to identify different
types of wound beds, signs of healing, and necrotic tissues. The text
helped me to identify the difference between various types of
dressings and which of them were optimal for various wound types. I
also learned through the use of Mosbys Videos how to properly
prepare a sterile site and cleanse and change the surgical dressing.

YOU LEARNED
AND HOW IT
RELATES TO THE
COMPETENCY.
EXPLAIN WHY IT
WAS
MEANINGFUL.

I learned that not all surgical wounds are dressed the same. I need to
first assess the type of wound, size, drainage, patients nutritional
status, and health status (among other things) to determine what type
of dressing is most appropriate. I also learned that while healing, the
types of dressings will also change depending on the assessed values
stated above. For example, a surgical site may require a Jackson-Pratt
drain post-op, then after a few days the drainage may subside and the
drain can be removed. This was meaningful because it demonstrates
that I must assess the surgical site every time a dressing must be
changed, and relay any changes in site to the primary physician. We
notify any changes to the site so orders can be changed to afford our
patients the best conditions for recovery.

DESCRIBE HOW YOU

WILL APPLY THIS
LEARNING IN YOUR
CURRENT AND
FUTURE NURSING
PRACTICE

Good; I understand the importance of cleansing and dressing changes

on the post-operative sites and the differences between the types of
dressings. I need to work on remembering what types of dressings are
used when. I currently use a reference sheet to identify the type of
dressings and what type of surgical site to apply them to. As I use
them continually in my medical/surgical practicum, my proficiency
rating will improve.

I will use this everyday in my medical/surgical practicum. As I use the

various dressings and techniques, I will become more familiar with
them and improve in identifying the best dressing type to use for each
surgical site. This knowledge will help me identify with future clients
surgical sites that are not healing properly and choose the correct
dressing for each site.
