Lesson: # 6, 7 & 8 of 30 for Unit D: Human Systems

Course: Biology 20 Unit D

Date:
Goal: To understand the human circulatory system
Essential Question: Explain the role of the circulatory system and
defense systems in maintaining an internal equilibrium
Learning Outcomes from Program of Studies:
General outcome 2: Students will explain the role of the circulatory
and defense systems in maintaining an internal equilibrium
20-D2.1s: Students will formulate questions about observed relationships and
plan investigations of questions, ideas, problems and issues
20-D2.4s: Students will work collaboratively in addressing problems and apply
the skills and conventions of science in communicating information and ideas and
in assessing results
20-D2.2s: Students will conduct investigations into relationships between and
among observable variables and use a broad range of tools and techniques to
gather and record data and information
20-D2.2k: Students will describe the action of the heart, blood pressure and the
general circulation of blood through the coronary, pulmonary and systemic
pathways
20-D2.3s: Students will analyze data and apply mathematical and conceptual
models to develop and assess possible solutions
Prerequisites:
Basic understanding of the functions of human body systems. Builds
upon Grade 8 science Cells and Systems unit and Science 10 Cycling
of Matter in Living Systems unit. Students will have worked with
partners to practice measuring blood pressure and heart rate (using
stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs). Students will have learned and
investigated the physiological aspect of blood pressure and heart rate
measurements (what is happening in the heart).
Materials and Technology:
- Blood Pressure cuffs
- Stethoscopes
- Heart Rate monitors
- Stopwatches

Differentiation:
Teacher will try to place students
with a nurse/doctor in an area of
the South Health Campus that the
student is comfortable with.
Students will not be forced into an
environment they are
uncomfortable with. If students do
not want to go to the South Health
Campus they can remain at the

school during this time and watch

videos regarding use of
technology to measure blood
pressure and heart rate. They will
complete the same log and tasks
as students at the South Health
Campus, they will obtain their
values from made-up scenarios.

Class Period 2:
Students will assess their log they
created with various patients data the
previous class. Students will research
and answer the following questions on
paper to hand in:
1. For the patient with the highest and the
patient with the lowest blood pressure
measurements, explain what their ailment
is, do you think its related to their blood
pressure measurement? Why or why not?
2. Pick one of your patients and explain all of
the factors you think played a role in
his/her blood pressure measurements.
In groups of 2-3, students will design a
test for obtaining various blood pressure
and heart rate measurements related to
different types of physical activity.

Teacher will
collect the
students answers
to the questions
and evaluate
them to check for
understanding.
Based on the
answers the
teacher will
decide which
topics need to be
reviewed more
deeply as a
whole class and
will design a
lesson to address
those unclear

Students will have access to all fitness

equipment and facilities at the YMCA to
carry out their tests.
Class Period 3:
Students will go to the YMCA at the
South Health Campus to participate in
their designed tests. Each group will be
given a heart rate monitor, a blood
pressure cuff and stethoscope.
Students will create a data collection sheet
with space to record all necessary
information for their tests
Students will hypothesize which exercise
will yield the highest heart rate and
whether or not blood pressure
measurements will be effected
One group member participates in the tests

are responsible for timing exercise

Groups will share

feedback
regarding the

will then take
feedback and
make any

fit
Teacher will
meet with each
group before they
begin their tests
to ensure their
test design is
acceptable and
that they will be
recording all
necessary
information.

Summative Assessment:
Students will create a formal lab report of their test and the results
they obtained. Students will hand in the lab report to be marked by the
teacher. Students will be marked according to a lab report rubric
provided to them at the beginning of the unit.
