Problem Statement
Countries including the United States- did not achieve
total equality
Gender stereotypes affect how people judge each other
Women do not have as many rights as men do
Women can be harshly judged if they dont meet gender stereotypes

Women Rights- Biggest and Most Common Problems

Issues:
General stereotypes
Less income in many industries
Public schools and industries based off of gender stereotypes
Gender discrimination
Less likely to join professional sports (as there not many professional
girls sports teams than there are boys teams)

Womens Rights Issues Outside of the

States

Today, there are many countries with very biased laws based on
gender:
In Islam and Yemens court- a womans testimony= half of a mans
testimony - usually not taken seriously by the jury
Saudi Arabia and Vatican City- women cant vote.
Yemen- doesnt allow women to leave the house without their
husbands permission.
In Saudi Arabia- women cant drive

The Womens Rights Movement- 1848 to

1920
Women fought back
Abigail Adams letter to her husband- told him to remember the ladies
July 19-20, 1848, Seneca Falls- the first gathering devoted to womens rights
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, one of the leaders in the gathering, devoted to creating a sacred
right of franchise
People suggested to make amendments to the Declaration- We hold these truths to be
self-evident, that all men and women are created equal. (The Declaration of
Sentiments)
Many peoples opinions changed- believed women deserved equal rights

Improvements Since 1920

No longer forced to marry at a young age
right to vote
right to participate in sports
right to have an education
right to have a job
right to make own decisions

ACLU
American Civil Liberties Union
devoted to helping the world achieve equality and full independence
Goals of the ACLU:
makes sure women are treated as fairly as men in court and criminal
justice
strives to destroy gender bias
convince people to pay women equal income
makes sure women have a fair chance in leading good, fair lives

What can we do?
Join or start programs like the ACLU -stand for womens rights
Be educated about womens rights
Let advocates tell the world about beliefs
Write/talk
Spread awareness
