Does the article make the Arab Spring out to be mostly successful or
a failure? Give examples to defend your position.
The Arab Spring was mostly a failure. I think this, because the text states, One
explanation is the absence of political alternatives to Islamism and military rule. This is
bad, because they dont have a democracy where the people have a say in the
government. They only have a government for Islam and a government that is run by
the military. Military rule is better than islamism. However, when you have a government
run by the military, you are defeating the whole purpose of having the Arab Spring. Also,
the government was going to turn into a theocracy. This is stated in the text, Taking
advantage of anti-authoritarian protests, Islamists provide social relief and education for
the working class, as a means of strengthening political power to establish a theocracy.
In a theocracy opinions are not wanted, so it is not giving much say to people. It is a
government run by the name of god. In addition, the Arab Spring was a failure, because
Islamists wanted to prevent the creation of Israel, because they feared that the Jewish
state would split the Arab countries. The text states With such zealous anti-Western
and anti-Israeli sentiments, Islamist domination in the Middle East would only lead to a
geopolitical catastrophe. This means that the Jewish state could make the Arab
countries disastrous if Israel was created.
2. In your opinion, what could the Arab spring have done to have more
success? Analyze the failures and come up with solutions to them.
I think that the Arab Spring could have been more of a success, if they tried to form a
government that worked well. One failure that they had was creating a government that
was run by the military and Islamism. If they were able to change it to a democracy,
where the people had a say in their government, it would have worked better. Also, the
government was going to turn into a theocracy, where people had no opinions. This
would cause more problems, because they have to follow what they are told to, or there
would be punishments. In Yemen, the people wanted to get rid of the president Saleh.
By doing this, many people were left dead from the protests. If the people tried to
created a peaceful way of protest, that convinced the president he might have given up
his power sooner. This would have left Hadi with more time to fix the government that
was falling apart. Another way that the Arab Spring could have become more
successful, is if people all around tried to come up with a compromise that agreed with
everyones views. This would have been better, because less people would have died. It
would have been a peaceful way of protest. Lastly, you could give people the chance to
be educated, so they can make the right decisions for their government. If they do/nt
want to be educated then they cant participate in the government. The government has
to give them the choice, and other countries need to help, so it happens. If this works in
one country, it can carry along to the others, were soon everyone knows how to do the
basics such as reading and writing.
