ACCOMODATIONS
Students with Learning Disables
Learning disabilities ranges from a mild case of memory lose to severe auditory processing disorder. Since there is such a wide range of
learning disabilities, I will need to work closely with the student, the students parents and case manager to understand exactly how I can
accommodate that individual student.
Students with gifted minds
There will be many parts to each of the stations that will require a higher level of cognitive thinking and reasoning. For the students that are
high achievers, I will be prepping them as a group prior to this lesson to be the group facilitators. They will be encouraged to ask more
questions then give answers. I will ask these students to model strategic use of necessary skills to solve the word problem and to help other
groups with a leadership mindset. These students will also be strongly encouraged to complete the extra credit extension once the group
they are helping is able to function without their aid.

TEACHING STRATEGY

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING/

ACTIVE STUDENT PARTICIPATION

15
Min

Given a table with two rows containing an

integer exponent and its equivalent
numerical value, SWBAT complete the table
using pattern recognition. (Application)
SWBAT identify a non-zero expression with
a zero exponent will result in 1 and an
expression with a negative exponent will
simplify into a fraction. (Comprehension)

Bell Work
- Students are given an incomplete table and
required to find a pattern and finish the
table using that pattern
Model with Direct Instruction
- Present zero and negative exponent
general rules
- Examples of how to simplify expressions
containing negative and zero exponents

Initial completed bell work when student shows

a completed table and can explain what pattern
they found.

SWBAT evaluate and simplify expressions

containing zero and negative integer
exponents. (Application)

40
Min

By the end of this lesson on integer

exponents, SWBAT construct expressions
containing zero and negative exponents to
represent whole numbers. (Synthesis)

Guided Practice in Pairs

- Students are given examples of expressions
containing zero and negative integer
exponents and asked to simplify the
expressions with their partners
- One student will write on the whiteboard
while the other in his/her notes. Switch
after each question.
Independent Practice
- Students will be given a Star Wars related
word problem where they have to
construct expressions containing zero and
negative exponents.
- Students will work in groups of four A
brief explanation of how my class works in
groups will be given (everyone has a group
responsibility)

15
Min

- I will be walking among students to ensure

they are writing down the general rules for zero
and negative exponents and the examples that
are given in lecture.
- I will ask the students to complete the simple
computation steps to ensure they are staying on
task.
- White Boards Students will show me the
work for evaluating and simplifying expressions
containing zero and negative integer exponents
- After the students are consistently getting the
correct answer, I will put up multiple
expressions to simplify. Students are able to
work at their own pace and simplify as many
expressions as they can in 5 minutes.
- Students will present their solutions and work
to me and after defending their answer, they will
write their expressions on the front board.
- Students will grade each others work as
solutions are presented.
- I will be walking among the students to
observe their work.
- For the advanced students I will have them
work on a creative way to re-teach or re-explain
the lesson by the end of the period.
