Lesson Plan

Teacher:
Kim Phillips

Subject:
Math
Prime and Composite
Factors

Arizonas College and Career Ready Standards:

4.OA.B.4. Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1100. Determine whether a given
whole number in the range 1 100 is prime or composite.
ISTE 6: Technology operations and concepts a. understand and use technology systems. b.
select and use applications effectively and productively.
Objective (Explicit):
Students will be able to find the factors of numbers between 1 and 100. Then, the
students will be able to determine whether the number is prime or composite based on
looking at the factors.
Students will be able to understand and use technology to create a concept map
of what they learned.

Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):

Students will explain and practice several different numbers with teacher. Students will
complete a worksheet and correctly solve the problems concerning prime/composite numbers
and factors.
Students will develop a mind map using Bubbl.us to explain concepts in lesson in their own
words and with examples.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
*Define a prime number
*Define a composite number
*Define factors
*Find factors of a given number
*Determine if the number is prime/composite
*Use technology to demonstrate understanding

Key vocabulary:
Prime: A number that can only be divided evenly by 1 and itself
Composite: A number that can be divided evenly by numbers other than 1
and itself.
Factors: the numbers you multiply together to get another number. The numbers multiplied
together are called factors of the final number.

Materials:

Bubbl.us to create a mind map (post concept map) and present to class after lesson. ri

Opening:
State objective
Ask students questions to check for previous knowledge.
Review multiplication facts.
Read aloud definitions.
Show the videos.

Instructional Input

Teacher Will:
Give direct instruction, check for knowledge, show
videos, ask questions to check understanding,
reiterate definitions from videos
After lesson teacher will introduce Bubbl.us and
demonstrate how to use to create a mind map about
the lesson.

Students Will:
Students will
listen and answer
questions when
asked and share
background
knowledge,
students will
describe and
show knowledge

Differentiation Strategy
Review of previous lessons for students if they do
not quickly recall, relate current information to
previous
Guided Practice

Teacher Will:

For this lesson teacher will demonstrate and ask

students to contribute to the demonstration
Teacher will post an example and show students
what to do
Teacher will use other examples to work out

Students Will:
When prompted
students will be
allowed to ask
questions
Students will
answer when
prompted with
their own

together
-Teacher will give students multiplication table to
complete together
-Teacher will discuss how the multiplication facts
will help them find factors of a larger number and
students use their chart to follow along
Teacher will check for understanding during the
entire lesson and by asking questions

thoughts
Students will
participate in all
examples and fill
in chart with
teacher guidance

Differentiation Strategy
Teacher will demonstrate more than one example
Teacher will provide simple examples to refer to

Independent
Practice
Teacher Will:
Teacher will offer individual help, give further
examples, promote thinking with questions
Teacher will ask students to share their work and
teacher will continue to guide student if full
understanding is not reached by stating what they
did get correct and leading students to what they
need to work on

Students Will:
Students will
practice
independent
problems, play
game for practice
and ask any
questions for
clarification
needed
After lesson,
students will
create a mind
map using
Bubbl.us.

Differentiation Strategy
Teacher will provide visual(simple example) for students to use during
independent work
Teacher will be available for individual help
Teacher will provide a vocab list for reference
Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections:

Students will share their work to show mastery.

Students will discuss their process of problem solving.
Teacher will lead closing discussion to check for any further
questions/misunderstandings.
Teacher will explain how to use factoring for everyday
experiences such as dividing items up evenly between friends or
planning a party knowing the total number of guests.
Teacher will grade worksheet. Teacher will check mindmap
before presentation and help students clarify any areas that are
not clear.
Assessment
Informal- Teacher will ask questions throughout
lesson, during we do teacher will observe during I
do teacher will check for understanding.
Formal - Students work will be turned in worksheet
for knowledge check and feedback will be written.
Students will create mind map and present to class.
