- Students will run 5 laps in the gym, do 20 push-ups, 25 crunches, and stretch as their warm
up. (10 minutes)

Relating to past experience and/or knowledge

-

After the warm up, we will all gather together and discuss if anyone has played badminton
before and what their experience level is.
If there is a projector in the gym, otherwise Ill use a computer, I will show a video of what
high level badminton looks like. This way the students will see how the game is supposed to
be played. We will also go over how to keep score. (10 minutes)

Creating a need to know

-

Badminton can be played by all ages and it is an activity you can do when you get older to
maintain a healthy level of physical activity. (2 minutes)

Sharing objective, in general terms

-

I will explain that todays objectives are to learn the basic rules of badminton and the proper
hitting motion. (2 minutes)

2. Content Delivery (include time allotment & instructional methodologies)

- Go over rules: discuss with the class what lines are in bounds and out of bounds, how far the
shuttlecock needs to travel on the serve, scoring, and any other questions they may have. Also
discuss the game differences of singles and doubles. (6-8 minutes)
- Demonstrate the proper hitting motion. (This can also be discussed while watching the
instructional video. After demonstration, students will partner up and hit the shuttlecock back
and forth. (10 minutes)
- If there is still time students may pair up and play doubles against each other.
3. Closure (include time allotment)
- Take down all nets and put everything away.
- Next class period we will play singles, doubles, and go over different game variations.
- Students will change back into their regular clothes. (5 minutes)

Technology Integration: Projector/computer for instructional and demonstrational video

Assessments Used: Students will be assessed on participation and effort for this lesson. I will also assess their hitting
motion and ability to make contact with a shuttlecock.
Differentiated Instruction:
- Court lines may vary depending on how hard a student is able to hit the shuttlecock.
- Scoring does not need to be official because I might have students swap sides to make the
game more even and so the game doesnt get too competitive.
Resources: hand out badminton rules, terminology, and court diagram study guide.

how to hit the shuttlecock. Today we will play different variations of badminton.
South Dakota Physical Education Content Standards Addressed:
Standard 1: The physically literate individual demonstrates proficiency in a variety of motor skills and
movement patterns.
Standard 2: The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and

Fitness Objectives: (The student(s) will )
1. Elevate heart rate by playing badminton.
2. Reach 2,000 steps on their pedometers.

Materials Needed: badminton nets, shuttlecocks, and racquets, pedometers, heart rate monitors
Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

The Lesson
1. Introduction (include time allotment)
Getting attention
- Students will go to the locker room and change into their PE clothes. (5 minutes)
- Student will partner up and continue playing doubles badminton that we learned in the
previous class period. (15 minutes)

Relating to past experience and/or knowledge

-

After playing doubles, I will have everyone gather around one net.
I will explain the different variations we will play and I will demonstrate with three other
students. (10 minutes)

Creating a need to know

-

Badminton can be played in many different ways other than the traditional way. Students can
be creative and think of their own variations to implement. (2 minutes)

Sharing objective, in general terms

-

I will explain that todays objectives are to play different variations, elevate heart rate, and
reach 2,000 steps on their pedometers while playing badminton. (2 minutes)

2. Content Delivery (include time allotment & instructional methodologies)

- Explain concept of 2 on 2 interchange. One player on each team starts on the court and the
other player is standing behind or off to the side of either court. Once a player hits the
shuttlecock, they need to run off the court as fast as possible. The players standing on the
outside of the court can only come into play after their teammate makes contact with the
shuttle cock. Demonstrate the game with other students and show them what it looks like. (6-8
minutes)
- Explain the concept of 2 on 2 court change.one player on each time is on the court and the
other member of each team stands behind or off to the side of the court. When a player hits
the shuttlecock over the net, they need to run as fast as they can to the other side of the net. It
does not matter which baseline they run to. Players need to watch out for each other so they
do not run into one another. The players who began off the court can come into play once
contact is made by their teammate. Demonstrate what the game should look like. (6-8
minutes)
- Another variation could be played while playing singles. After contact with the shuttlecock,
the student need to run back and touch the out of back out of bounds line before being able to
hit the shuttlecock again. (2 minutes)
- Students can choose which variation they want to play. They will play until the end of class.
3. Closure (include time allotment)
- Take down all nets and put everything away.
- Next class period I will introduce a new net game, Speedminton.
- For next class period students must watch this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AwcmCOLgz0
- Students will change back into their regular clothes. (5 minutes)

Technology Integration: pedometers, heart rate monitors

Assessments Used: Students will be assessed on reaching their 2,000 step objective and their heart rate monitors.
Differentiated Instruction:
- Court lines may vary depending on how hard a student is able to hit the shuttlecock.
- Scoring does not need to be official because I might have students swap sides to make the
game more even and so the game doesnt get too competitive.
- Speedminton racquets and speeders can also be used.
Resources: hand out speedminton rules, terminology, and court diagram study guide.
