OBJECTIVE: I will write, discuss and solve

problems by
collecting data and analyzing

FOCUS QUESTION:
How does modeling with an experiment
help you determine possible outcomes
and the likelihood of each outcome?

We will practice formal and informal

Objective and Focus ?:

Choral read the objective and focus question and
highlight key words.
Getting Started:
Students will be given a scenario in which Ms. Pollard
wants to assign homework every day in April and Mr.
Reading wants to let them flip a coin every day to
determine if they have homework or not. Students
will be asked:
If we flip a coin, what are the chances of
landing on heads?
If we flip a coin, what are the chances of
landing on tails?

GRR MODEL

Now they are given a new scenario: Students wants

something to flip that will give them a more likely
chance of not having homework. What should they
use?

We will use the scenario of flipping a cup and seeing

if it lands on its side or end. Students will be asked:
Do you think a paper cup will be better than a
coin?
Do you think the cup is more likely to land on
its end or on its side? Or is it equally likely?

Students will predict which landing position will
occur more.
Students will work with their face partner to flip the
cup 50 times and record the results on the
labsheet.
When finished, students will complete problem B
with their face partner.
As teams complete problem B, they will record
their results into the class chart on the Smart
Board.
Engage in conversation with the students on
