Thesis Title: Enhancing vital rate estimation using modeling and innovative PIT tag technology
on the San Juan River.

Aquatic Research Technician

September 2014 - December 2014
Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Fort Collins, CO
Perform research at a statewide level. Sampling fish populations using backpack, bank, and raft
electrofishing gear. Used PIT tags and mobile PIT tag antennas to generate population estimates
with program MARK. Collect fin clips for genetic analysis. Collect fry for analysis of
myxospore loads. Examined trout fry for disease symptoms. Performed stream habitat surveys.
Ran New Zealand Mudsnail experiment. Performed fish sampling to determine the effects of
instream habitat alterations. Collection of aquatic invertebrates for experiments. Performed
native species population estimates. Dissected fish to find coded wire tags. Performed
equipment and facilities maintenance, data entry, summary, and analysis. Technical writing for
publication.
Aquatic Technician
July 2014 - September 2014
Colorado Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit
Fort Collins, CO
Perform population surveys on trout streams using backpack electrofishers. Take stomach
samples for diet analysis. Assess habitat for fishes in streams. Remove, prepare, and analyze
otoliths. General equipment maintenance. Data entry. Selected sample sites. Independently ran
sampling trips. Helped with ecotoxicology experiments with fathead minnows. Removed
minnow livers for analysis.
Lead Aquatic Technician
May 2013 - November 2013 and April 2012 - November 2012
Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Steamboat Springs, CO
Assist aquatic biologist in a variety of work projects including non-native species control and
monitoring on local reservoirs, river systems and off-channel impoundments of the Yampa and
Elk River watersheds. Duties included sampling using backpack, bank, and boat electrofishing
gear, gill nets, fyke nets, seines and crayfish traps. Projects included fish population surveys,
crayfish population surveys, extensive non-native species removal, genetic sampling, disease
sampling, spawning operations, fish closure monitoring and maintenance, water quality
assessments, equipment and facilities maintenance, and data entry, summary and analysis.
Monitoring effects of fishing closure of streams on spawning habitat and success. Monitoring
and stocking of native cutthroat trout. Used PIT tags for cutthroat trout monitoring. Created
excel database to analyze distribution (using GIS) of nonnative crayfish for more effective
removal. Prepare summary report on crayfish data for season. Set up other technicians with work
plans, supervise and schedule work during the season.
Aquatic Technician
April 2011 - November 2011 and July 2010 - November
2010
Colorado Division of Wildlife
Steamboat Springs, CO

Forestry Technician
June 2010 - September 2010
Colorado State Forest Service
Fort Collins, CO
Performed invasive insect (Gypsy Moth and Emerald Ash Borer) surveys around the state.
Educated public about the insects and ways to prevent their spread. Placed traps around the state
at predetermined locations found by using GPS. Recovered traps and inspected for insects and
collected specimens for conclusive identification.
Resource Management Seasonal Technician
June 2008 - May 2010
City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Program
Fort Collins, CO
Conduct raptor nest surveys. Conduct rare plant surveys. Plant, water, and provide other aftercare
of native plants for restoration areas. Control noxious and other exotic weedy plants through
mowing, cutting, spraying herbicides, and other techniques. Assist in prairie dog management
efforts including fumigation and dusting burrows for fleas. Operate, maintain, and perform minor
repairs on equipment and vehicles such as mowers, trucks, ATVs, sprayers, pumps, chainsaws,
weed whips, tractors, bobcat, etc. Assist on prescribed burns. Educate the public through field
contacts and other communications. Supervise volunteer groups with various projects.
Field Crew Leader
August 2007 - June 2008
State of Montana Forest Nursery
Missoula, MT
Supervise and perform all aspects of seedling care including planting, weeding, and harvesting.
Operate tractors with various implements including mowers, lifters, seeders, and others. Operate
various forklifts. Organize, setup, and supervise the irrigation system for all bare root seedlings.
Setup an organization system for warehouse and coolers and maintain that organization during
nursery operations. Work with and supervise a crew for all the above.
Field Technician (Amphibian)
June 2005 - September 2005
Oregon State University
Corvallis, OR
Performed hand sampling for in stream amphibians. Marked all captured for mark/recapture
population estimates. Measured length and weight for captured amphibian. Took habitat
measurements to describe the type of stream that was being sampled. Wrote detailed field notes.
Performed data entry/record keeping.
Field Technician
May 2003 - July 2003
Oregon State University
Corvallis, OR
Performed survivability survey to determine chick survival rates. Captured Greater Sage Grouse
to put on/implant transmitters for telemetry. Performed daily nest checks until the chicks
hatched. Kept track of nest depredations for collared hens. Took daily locations with radio
telemetry of sage grouse. Sampled vegetation at the daily locations (line intercept method). Setup
and removed insect pitfall traps at the daily locations. Wrote detailed field notes about daily
conditions of grouse. Performed data entry/record keeping.

Aquatic Toxicology Lab Technician
