Section 2: APPROACH TO RESEARCH
What is your research problem statement?
(Because research problem statements can evolve
throughout the process, this statement should fit the
most current version of your project.)

The problem is most girls cannot protect themselves

from unwanted advances because our society fails to
educate them properly.
Another problem is boys can do whatever
they want without consequences.
What are your research question(s)? (Because
research question can evolve throughout the
process, this statement should fit the most current
version of your project.)

5/5

1. How are boys perceptions of girls and sexuality

formed?
2. What information should girls receive to protect
themselves?
a. What information are girls actually getting?
b. Why is there a gap in between the two?
2 How can girls get this education?
Describe the Research Method You Used. Give
a detailed report of how and why you collected data
in the way you did. Attach any research instrument
you used (survey, interview questions, etc.). Explain
how many data samples you collected. Describe any
limitations of your research method.

The first method of research used was focus

group. We chose this because it was able to
us insight on the mindsets of boys and how
they affect girls self esteem. Focus group
was a good choice because being part of a
group often creates a more relaxed
atmosphere than a one-to-one interview.
Therefore, information gathered from
discussion groups is often more varied than
if participants had been interviewed on a
one-to-one basis. Another advantage of
using discussion groups, as opposed to oneto-one interviews, is that they provide indepth information from a number of
individuals simultaneously, making it a time
effective method of gathering data.
We had a total of 30 boys who turned in the
questionnaire forms, but we did focus groups
on three classes, which included boy and girl
responses to make the dialogue better.
Personal connections with some of the
participants might have influenced their
answers, which could have altered our
research a bit.

Section 3: DATA ANALYSIS & FINDINGS

Attach Data Compiled for Analysis. Attach the
data that you organized and coded for analysis.
Add Two Additional Annotated Bibliography
Entries in MLA Format. Use recent CPAR-related
readings that you have done in class to add two
entries for your annotated bibliography here.
Bedford, Crystal, Danan Edelman, Ellie Kim, Lauren Freeman,
and Lisa Davis.
"Male Gaze and Its Impact on Gender Portrayals in Media."
Ed. Laura Wing,
Nolan Higdon, and Mickey Huff. Project Censored (2015):
n. pag. Web. 27
Jan. 2016.
This article educates readers of the male gaze theory in media
in different aspects. It targeted to an audience of people
uneducated to male gaze in media. We trust this source because
our student teachers referred it to us and it has reliable authors
and information. This article can be used to educate people about
the male gaze theory in media.
Hudson, Chris. "Teenagers and Self Esteem: Key Factors
Understanding Teenagers Blog."
Understanding Teenagers Blog. Understanding Teenagers,
25 May 2010. Web. 13 Dec.
2015.
This article educates its readers on what self esteem is and
how teenagers are affected by it. In a particular section, it states,
For teenagers, girls particularly, the social pressures exerted by
constant media messages about the perceived ideal body type can
cause significant levels of dissatisfaction about their body. This is
compounded by increased anxiety in relation to the changes that
are occurring within a girls body and the constant subtle and, not
so subtle, comparisons to peers and others. This quote is perfect
for my research project. This article is targeted towards a general
audience of males and females of any age. I trust this source
because it is factual and not bias. This article can be used for
educating one about self esteem.

Identity Key Concept Terms and Definitions.

Add between 2-5 key concept terms and definitions
that you use to analyze your data here.

10/10

Report Findings. Explain your most significant

findings from this round of data collection. In other
words, what story does your data tell? Make 2-4
claims and back each claim up with specific data
you collected. Use key concepts from your readings
to explain your claims.

20/25

1. Promiscuous: characterized by or
involving indiscriminate mingling or
association, especially having sexual
relations with a number of partners on
a casual basis.
2. Chivalry: the sum of the ideal
qualifications of a knight, including
courtesy, generosity, valor, and
dexterity in arms.
3. Double Standard: a rule or principle
that is unfairly applied in different ways
to different people or groups.

We believe that the way boys are raised affect how

they treat girls.
For example, a couple of boys stated their
admirations for their mothers as, the way she

knows me better than i know myself, her personality,

her strong stature, her nice attitude and how she
loves to compliment the ugliest people, caring,
friendly, she goes out a lot, she cares for me, she
is responsible, loving, no matter what, she finds a
way to protect and feed her family, she handles her
business with work, i'm forever grateful for the things
shes done, the means shes met, the sacrifices, the
stress and tears, and for molding me to become the
young man I am today, and she loves and cares for
me, no matter what happens.

These same boys described their dream girls as,

either their current girlfriend, or as follows: shes

always there for me, when i need someone to talk to,

shes there to listen, were best friends first, boyfriend
and girlfriend second, shes my backbone, my heart,
the reason I smile and come to this hell hole everyday,

a beautiful girl with dreams and aspirations, a girl who

pushes me to be better, a girl being herself, never
lets people put her down, never lets a person change
her,we have to have a connection on other levels,
love God, be true to herself, and be a good wife and
mother. With these answers, they were also the

boys that admitted to respecting girls because that

is how they were raised.
Whereas, there were some boys who described their
admirations for their mothers as beautiful, caring,
she real, she gave birth to me, personality, she
loves me, shes laid back, and shes always goes
out. These boys described their mothers in basic

ways where it seems as if they didnt have much to

say about her. Their responses to this, we believe,
led to their misogynistic responses about their
dream girl and why they do not respect girls.
The way they speak about girls also shows their
immaturity and reflects the kind of person they are.
For example, one boy described his dream girl as
his slave. Other boys said they dont respect girls
or practice chivalry because girls dont respect
themselves and theses hoes are stupid.

Section 4: REFLECTION & NEXT STEPS

Reflect on Progress. What significant things have
you learned through this process thus far? What has
been most surprising, rewarding, or difficult about
this process? How have you involved your mentor?

This process has taught us to expect the

unexpected. When doing our focus group we
expected Reeds 4th hour class to be full of
ignorance! In all actuality, it was amazing!
They came up with interesting answers and
the discussion was very powerful. The
hardest part of this process was trying to get
them to be serious. They had some really
misogynistic views that were hard for us to

not respond to how we wanted. Our mentor

has been very helpful. He has allowed us to
use his class
Plan for Next Steps. You have seven weeks to
collect additional research and complete an action
project. Based on what you have done thus far, what
are your plans for the upcoming seven weeks?

5/5

Based on what we have done thus far, we

plan to do ten personal interviews based on
our results from our focus group. We will also
do a focus group in our class also. We hope
to have enough data after this, to do our
action project. We do not know what our
action project will be yet, but we do know
that we want to go back and show the guys
how their actions really affect girls and for
them to take this seriously and want to be
better young men.
