4 THE PERIPHERAL
NERVOUS SYSTEM
BIO 30

OBJECTIVE

Explain the function of the peripheral

nervous system in voluntary (somatic)
and involuntary (autonomic) systems

Ie. Sympathetic and parasympathetic

responses

REVIEW
How we interpret the external world is a
combination of many neurons firing at different
times.

Peripheral Nervous System: Everything outside

the brain and the spinal cord
ie. Everything outside the CNS

CNS VS. PNS (P.433)

There are 2 main parts to this system:

1. Sensory somatic system
2. Autonomic nervous system

THE SENSORY-SOMATIC SYSTEM

System is under (mostly) voluntary control.
- Includes muscle movement (voluntary) and
reflexes (involuntary)
Controlled by:
- 12 cranial nerves (vision, hearing, balance,
taste, smell, facial muscle movement)
- 31 pairs of spinal nerves (skeletal movement)
Our conscious awareness of our surroundings
and all our actions to cope with it are part of
this system.

AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

Involuntary regulation of internal conditions

Such as:

Controls smooth muscles, cardiac muscles,

the internal organs, and glands.

controlled by 2 distinct and sometimes

opposing systems:
1. Sympathetic Nervous System
2. Parasympathetic Nervous System

ADD TO TABLE

Sympathetic System: Prepare the body for

stress

Parasympathetic System: return the body

to normal resting levels after adjusting to
stress

EFFECTS OF THE AUTONOMIC NS

following organs
