SC.1.E.5.3
Investigate how magnifiers make things appear bigger and help people see things they
cannot see without them.
LAFS.1.SL.1.1
Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and
texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
a.

Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others with care,
speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).

b.

Build on others talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others

through multiple exchanges.

c.

Ask questions to clear up any confusion about the topics and texts under
discussion

Essential Understanding
(What is the big idea or
essential question that you
want students to come away
with? In other words, what,
aside from the standard and
our objective, will students
understand when they finish
this lesson?)

Students will be able to effectively communicate their ideas with their peers based on
how magnifiers help us investigate things that are very far away or very small. Students
will practice their active listening skills throughout each turn-and-talk which will assist the
students in determining how magnifiers make things appear bigger and help people see
things they cannot see without them. The students will practice accountable talk by
writing responses individually before turning and talking with their partner.

Objectives- What are you

teaching?
(Student-centered: What will
students know and be able to

Students will be able to:

- Use hand lenses (Day 1) or telescopes (Day 2) to observe objects.
- Observe objects with and without magnification (Day 1 & 2).
- Recognize that some things cannot be seen with the naked eye (Day 1 & 2).

- Effectively use the turn-and-talk method to communicate their ideas with their
classmates while practicing their active listening skills and accountable talk (I
agree/disagree because, I want to add...) (Day 1 & 2).
- Respond to questions based on the conversation the students had during their turn-andtalk time (Day 1 & 2).
- This objective is being taught in order for students to recognize that some things in the
world cannot be seen without the use of magnifying tools.
- This lesson fits within the larger plan of teaching due to the connection with the
Earth/Space unit. Day 1 will focus on the use of hand lenses in which students will
observe what objects look like with and without the use of the hand lenses. Day 2 will
focus on the use of microscopes and observing the differences between the appearance
of sand and sugar.
- I am teaching the lesson in this way for students to review the previous learning such
as, viewing stars from Earth (cannot see all of them without a telescope). I am teaching
the lesson in this way in order for students to experience a hands-on approach to
observing the functions of a hand lens and telescope (Day 1 & 2).
- It is important for students to learn this concept in order for them to recognize that not
all objects in the Earth look the same to the naked eye as they do under a hand lens (Day
1) or microscope (Day 2). It is important for students to learn that hand lenses and
telescopes make things appear bigger and help people see things they cannot see
without them.
Day 1:
- Formative assessment: Students will be assessed throughout the lesson with the use of
turn-and-talk evaluation and documentation of participation with accuracy. Students will
be asked to identify the differences between the viewing of objects with the naked eye in
comparison to the viewing of objects with a hand lens. Students will share their thinking
(or their partners thinking) with the class to informally address active listening skills and
accountable talk.
- Summative assessment: Exit ticket: "Hand lenses and microscopes are both
magnifiers. What is the purpose of using these science tools?"
Day 2:
- Formative assessment: Students will be assessed throughout the lesson with the use of

turn-and-talk evaluation and documentation of participation with accuracy. Students will

be asked to identify the differences between the viewing of objects with the naked eye in
comparison to the viewing of objects with a telescope. Students will share their thinking

- Summative assessment: Magnifiers Quiz: Matching images of hand lens, microscope,
binoculars, and telescope to proper label. Circling images of science tools that help you
see things that are little and crossing out science tools that help you see things that are
far away.

is necessary for a teacher
to teach this material?

How will you ensure

students have this
previous knowledge?
Who are your learners?
What do you know about
them?
What do you know about
their readiness for this
content?

- A telescope is an optical instrument designed to make distant objects appear nearer,

containing an arrangement of lenses, or of curved mirrors and lenses, by which rays of
light are collected and focused and the resulting image magnified.
- A hand lens is a small device used to magnify something. A hand lens consists of
a lens made of a piece of glass or plastic. The lens is usually attached to a frame that can
be swiveled so the lens moves inside a protective cover.
- To ensure that students' have this previous knowledge, students will complete a preassessment based on the appropriate functions of hand lenses and telescopes.
- My learners are first grade students that have previously examined hand lenses and
exploring various objects in science. My learners have learned that telescopes can help
people to see the stars at night due to the magnification.
- I know that my students enjoy working with partners through the use of observational
data that has been recorded throughout each school day. Many of the students enjoy
working with others throughout the Daily 5 centers and often choose to work with a
partner when given the option.
- After reviewing their work from previous lessons based on the use of hand lenses, the
students have shown readiness in the identification of the functions of hand lenses and
telescopes. The students have explored with hand lenses throughout the Daily 5 centers
and will begin to examine more objects to make connections with their previous
experiences.

Hand lenses have no affect on the size that objects appear to be

Hand lenses and telescopes can change the size of objects
Hand lenses and telescopes are only used to examine small objects
Telescopes make objects appear smaller
Telescopes have no affect on the size that objects appear to be
Telescopes are only used to look at stars
The size of the telescope affects the size of the object being viewed
Lesson Implementation
- Day 1: Students will predict the uses of hand lenses and discuss previous uses of hand
lenses in the classroom (center activity magnifying small words, observing details in
ribbon, etc.).
- Day 2: This lesson will include a review session in which the students discuss their prior
knowledge based on a previous lessons (from Day 1-hand lenses).
- Both lessons will include multiple uses of modeling. I will model how to properly use a
hand lens (Day 1) and a telescope (Day 2). The students will each have an opportunity to
use individual hand lenses to observe various objects (Day 1).
- Demonstrations and direct instruction will take place throughout both lessons as
students learn the purpose of using the hand lens and telescope. Guided release will be
used as I observe an object with the class using the hand lens (Day 1) and the telescope
(Day 2). Students will then observe an object with partners with the use of both
magnifying utensils before individually observing a variety of objects.
- Guided release will be demonstrated throughout this lesson as students discuss the
uses of hand lenses (Day 1) and telescopes (Day 2) before completing the assignment.
Students will review prior knowledge material, discuss their observations and learning,
have instruction on the purpose of the use of hand lenses (Day 1) and telescopes (Day
2), participate in turn-and-talks, and discuss the purpose of using hand lenses and
telescopes to observe objects.
Day 1:

the tools are called 'magnifiers'. We are going to explore with these tools to see if we can
figure out what the term 'magnify' means.
Turn and talk: Who thinks that they know what these tools are called? Show hand lens
and microscope.
Everyone is going to get a penny and a hand lens. We are going to see what letters and
numbers we can see on the penny with ONLY our eyes. Then we are going to see what
letters and numbers we can see on the penny using the hand lens. ONLY USING THE
"HEADS" SIDE OF THE PENNY!
- 3 minutes to write what you see with your EYES ONLY
- Pass out hand lenses-----4 minutes to write what you see with the HAND LENS
- Leave penny on desk
Take your partner and hand lens to see what other objects you can find in the classroom
that show more detail when looked at with the hand lens. RECORD 5 OBJECTS ON YOUR
PAPER! You pick and object, then your partner picks and object, and the last object you
will pick together.
When you and your partner are called back to the table, you will be looking through a
microscope at either SUGAR or SALT. You will circle the one that you look at on your
paper. You will only have 2 MINUTES at the table to draw what you see through the
microscope.
EXPLAIN---If you finish early, flip your paper over and pick one of the objects that you
found in the classroom to draw. Draw the details that you were able to see when looking
through your hand lens.

Accommodations (If
needed)
(What students need specific
accommodation? List
individual students (initials),

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
- The students in the class express and display interest in working with partners in
science. This gives students a chance to share their thinking to demonstrate that science
is social.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
- This lesson connects to the local community because students must recognize that
there are multiple objects that they may not be able to see with only their eyes. Students
must recognize that these tools can be used to assist people in viewing small objects or
objects that are far away.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
- Students that need enrichment will be encourage to write other objects that they would
use a hand lens to observe (Day 1) or objects that they would use a telescope to observe
(Day 2).
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
- Students that need additional language support will be allowed to verbally explain the
uses of hand lenses and microscopes. Students that need additional language support
will also be encouraged to draw an illustration of their thinking in order for a deeper
explanation of the information that they provide.
MM: Student may choose to not participate in class activities/lessons. Student
occasionally responds to positive reinforcement, but is often left alone to "cool down"
before being asked to complete any further assignments. Student requires extra time to
complete tasks and is allowed to finish work during center time or bell work the next day.
Student occasionally separates them self from the class by pulling the desk away from
