Unit: A Toy

Story

Date:
Year Level: 2

Lesson: 3
Key Learning Area: Technologies / Science / History

Curriculum Outcome: Generate, develop and record design ideas through describing, drawing
and modeling (ACTDEP006)
Explore how technologies use forces to create movement in products (ACTDEK002)
How changing technology affected peoples lives (at home and in the ways they worked, travelled,
communicated and played in the past) (ACHASSK046)
Learning Intention (WALT): Research and plan for a purpose
Success Criteria (WILF):
I can explain what makes a toy move
I can explain why some toys are better for different aged children
I can identify different parts of a toy and how they are joined

Introduce the Design Brief.

Resource Sheet 3
Design Brief

Refer back to the start of the unit and the discussion

about Hospitals. Explain that students will be
working in groups of 2 or 3. Explain criteria.
Discuss what might/might not be suitable for
6 8 years olds
Use in a hospital
How will we approach this task?
Talk to students about the Design, Make, Appraise
process. (See below for more detail of DMA)

NOTE gauge students

attention as to how much
detail you explain at this
stage.

At this stage tell students we will be doing some

The detail can be added
research and planning before we make our toys. At
at each stage if
the end we will check that they have been successful necessary

(met the design brief)

Have students move into their groups
5 min

Small groups (determined

by teacher)

Begin research
Allow students some discussion time in their groups
What ideas do they have at this point?
How will their toy move?
Record some ideas from their discussion in their
journals.

Technology Journal

Model assessing how a toy moves. E.g. when I push

this car, the wheels move and it rolls across the floor.
In groups ask students to look at several toy samples
and record in their journals how they move.

Toy

Push/Pull How it moves

Truck

Push

Wheels turn, car moves

across floor

Boat

Push

Boat slides across the water

Look at some of the sites on A Toy Story Webmix

Begin by showing historical toy tractor from National
Museum Toy Tractor and Historical Toy Cars.
(History)
Also look at Australian Aboriginal Toys and Bush
A Toy Story Webmix Toys (indigenous perspective)
(Resources)
As well as African Children Toys and Toy Samples
This Webmix includes
Discussion Questions
historical toys from the
National Museum as well
What are they made from?
as Australian indigenous
How are the parts joined?
toys (past and recent)
How are they used?
What is different between old toys and modern
toys?
Can you use any of these ideas in your own toy
design?
How might a toy for a baby differ from a toy for a
seven year old?
Do toys have to be especially for boys or girls, or
can both use them?

How did the environment and availability of

materials drive design choices in historical
and indigenous toys?
Have students record some ideas from the
discussion in their journals.

Look at the book Bush Toys A Living History.

(This book is a collection of toys from eastern
Arrernte communities in Central Australia)

Bush Toys A Living

History (book)

Could we use some of these ideas in our

design?

Notes

Design, Make, Appraise

1. Research and plan our moving toys
We will look at what happens when you push/pull a toy (e.g. the wheels
move, it slides across something)
We will look at some other toys on the
A Toy Story Webmix - (Resources) and discuss.
We will draw plans/designs
We will think about what materials are available/what we need
(Appraise) Does our design meet the criteria? Will it work?
2. Make
We will look at skills/techniques we might need to learn to complete our
toys
Learn skills
Make our toys
3. Appraise
Does our toy move as planned?
What problems are there? (Parts falling off, not working as planned)
Does it meet the criteria?
4. Make adjustments
