THE BRIEF
You will, along with the directors, form an ensemble company to produce and perform The Crucible by Arthur Miller. There will be four public performances by the company
between 16th and 19th March 2016. There may be additional performances to schools as a result of your own promotion as a company, and these matinee performances may
be accompanied by a Q and A session with the audience. You will take part in a range of performance workshops to extend your skills with a particular focus on voice, arts
business and the healthy performer, in addition to researching, exploring and rehearsing a piece for public performance that honours the spirit of Millers story. You will also
work as a company to develop additional devised sections, musical pieces and physical set pieces.
The process will be skill based, providing you with the training and the basic tools required for creating a piece of ensemble theatre. You will gain skills in physical theatre,
voice, large scale ensemble work, choral work, storytelling, improvisation and approaches to text. Your company will be expected to take responsibility for promoting their
own work to schools and other local organisations as well as the general public. You will be expected to demonstrate the importance of a whole company approach and will
be expected to work in a professional and mature manner of an artist.
As an actor, you will explore many different types and styles of theatre, characterisation and storytelling. You will be expected to take part in group discussions presenting
ideas and findings on subject areas surrounding the story of The Crucible..
Please note that as well as extensive research into the subject matter, you will look at some of the following practitioners in relation to the work: Meyerholdt, Grotowski,
Dario Fo, Peter Brook, Robert Lepage, Steven Berkoff, Eugenio Barba, Stanislavski, Jacques Lecoq, Bertold Brecht and Augusto Boal. When researching the work of these
practitioners, bear in mind that they have all influenced and inspired each other in some way, which, in turn, should inspire you in relation to the piece and your craft.
Individual contribution to the rehearsal and devising process is essential, but we must also work together and establish a solid theatre company. We will have a short and
intensive rehearsal period on this project so close collaboration with your directors, the technical team and each other is essential to the success of the final ensemble. A
detailed personal scrapbook as well as a comprehensive contribution to the online blog site is essential in order to map and record your progress and your development as
a company member and as a performer.
