Elaborate Gingerbread creations win

cash prizes from Kohler Foundation
KOHLER, Wis., Feb. 8, 2016
The winners of the 19th Annual
Gingerbread Festival competition
have been announced by Kohler
Foundation, Inc. During the
month of December, gingerbread
creations of all sizes and shapes
were displayed at the Waelderhaus in Kohler. Prizes, based on
votes tallied from a record 8,300
visitors, are being awarded in six
categories. The overall highest
vote-getter of the Festival was the
charming submission from RCS
Empowers, Christmas on the
Farm.
The first-place winners in
each category were awarded
$500.
They
include:
Pre-school: Cedar Grove-Belgium
Elementary (Ms. Hokansons
AM/PM classes) The Last Little
Lighthouse.
Grades K-2: Kohler Elementary
(Ms. DeAmicos class) Penguin
Party.

KPAL Annual Brat Fry

coming up February 21
The Kohler Police Athletic
League (KPAL) is selling tickets
for its annual brat fry to be held
Sunday, February 21 from 11:30
a.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Kohler Village Fire House. Each $5 ticket
is good for $5 in trade for food
or beverage at the brat fry (carry-outs available). Each ticket
will be entered for a chance to
win a door prize. Raffle tickets
will also be available for purchase
at the event.
Brats, burgers, chicken sand-

wiches, potato salad, beans, desserts, and drinks will be served.

Proceeds from the event go
toward KPAL Kohler youth programs.

Core Family Challenge
Cup takes place March 12
The Sheboygan County Tennis
Association (SCTA) announces
the date for its annual fundraiser.
The SCTA Family Challenge Cup
will be held on Saturday, March
12, 2016 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30
p.m. at The Sports Core in Kohler.
Help support local youth tennis
by participating in this very fun
event. The 14th Annual Family Challenge Cup will consist of
doubles round robin play (e.g.,
possible teams: Mother/Daughter;
Brother/Sister;
Husband/Wife;
Grandmother/Grandson; etc.). All
tennis ability levels are welcome
to join as teams will be placed
into appropriate ability levels and
participants will compete in round
robin play against other teams
within the same ability level.
In addition to round robin tennis
play, tennis trivia and raffle prize
drawings make this a fun event for
all. The winning team goes home
with the traveling trophy cup for
the year. The Family Challenge
Cup is open to the public and you
do not need to be a member of the
Sports Core to participate. Entries

2015-16 Distinguished Guest Series.
A seven-time Grammy winner,
Gladys Knight has enjoyed #1 hits

Georgia-born, Knight began
performing gospel music at age
four in the Mount Mariah Baptist Church and sang as a guest

Kohler students
participate in Trees
for Tomorrow
Trees for Tomorrow, located in
Eagle River, Wisconsin, is an accredited natural resource specialty
school. The mission of Trees for
Tomorrow is to promote sustainable management of our resources
through transformative educational experiences.
This fall, seven high school students in Honors Biology at Kohler
High School participated in the
high school component at Trees
for Tomorrow. Founded in 1944
by nine paper companies, the
Trees for Tomorrow Natural Resources Education center is used
year round to educate students
about the natural environment in
Wisconsin, as well as its need for
preservation and restoration. The
program also teaches students
about various outdoor activities,
from recreation to survival, and
emphasizes leadership and cooperation principles.
Christy Zheng, Tilydia Xiong,
Tiffany Xiong, Hallie Wollin, Issie Smith, Frances Schueller, and
Rachel Safford were transported

to Eagle River, along with students from neighboring school

districts, to participate in Trees
for Tomorrow. During workshops
students contributred in field studies conducted in the forests, lakes,
and streams of the area. On the
trip, they joined in many activities
including learning survival skills
and geocaching. The group also
enjoyed a hike along the cliff sides
in the Porcupine Mountains in the
Upper Peninsula, where they got
to see breathtaking views over the
cliff as well as an old copper mining path with winding streams and
waterfalls. The student team stated that the trip not only taught important environmental skills, but
also gave them great leadership
skills and an even greater ability
to work as a team.
The students and the school
would like to thank all of the

Sheboygan County Conservation

receive a donation from Kohler
Credit Union thanks to the efforts
of credit union employees and
guests who participated in various fundraising activities at their
annual holiday party. The event
brought in $5000 which will be
equally split between the two
charities to help with their fundraising efforts.
The
fundraising
activities
brought in a total of $3,325
through items that were donated
by employees and various businesses in the community. The
credit union then donated $1,675
to bring the total to $5,000 to be
donated to the two charities.
Kohler Credit Union would
like to thank the businesses, organizations and affiliates that donated items for the holiday party.
Our organization is exceptionally
proud to be a part of such a generous community, said Tony Klockow, president of Kohler Credit
Union.
Pink Heals of Sheboygan County is a local non-profit organization that helps raise funds and creates immediate care for families
affected by cancer. Many times

funds raised are used to help alleviate the financial burden that
comes along with extensive medical care that these families endure. Pink Heals is a nationwide
movement with more than 50 Pink
Heals fire trucks across the United
States and Canada. One hundred
percent of proceeds donated to or
fundraised through this organization are used locally and serve our
neighbors in our community.
The Volunteer Center of Ozaukee County is a resource for more
than 70 community agencies and
non-profits in the county including those that focus on healthcare,
senior care, poverty, disasters, illiteracy and homelessness. It provides organizations a connection
point for finding volunteers and
resources they need to meet their
missions, which positively affect
the community they serve.

Kohler seventh grader advances to State

Spelling Bee
On Monday, January 18,
Kohler Elementary and Middle School held their annual
District Spelling Bee.
Students first competed in
their classes, then the winner from each third through
eighth grade class advanced
to the District Spelling Bee.
The winner of the Kohler
District Spelling Bee was

seventh grader Jia Phillips.

Second place went to eighth
grader Henry LeBlanc.
Jia went on to win the
CESA 7 Regional Spelling
Bee held at Acuity Insurance
on February 1. She will advance to compete in the Wisconsin State Spelling Bee in
Madison on March 18.

his role, Eis will manage existing
business member relationships
and develop business lending
opportunities in the Sheboygan,
Manitowoc, Calumet and Fond
du Lac areas.

and has formed many outstanding business relationships. I am

Eis joins Kohler Credit Union
with 30 years of commercial
lending experience. He has specialized in the financial needs of
businesses in an array of indus-

tries in Sheboygan, Manitowoc,

Calumet and Brown County. Prior to joining the credit union, Eis
was vice president of business
development and commercial
lending at a financial institution
in Manitowoc. His extensive
business lending background
includes years of experience
with government lending programs such as SBA, WHEDA
and USDA. Additionally, he has
helped small business owners
with his experience in community Revolving Loan Funds (RLF).
Eis holds undergraduate degrees
in both business and marketing
from the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc and participates
in continuing educational to ensure he can best meet the needs
of business owners.
Eis participates in community outreach programs and has

worked with many non-profit organizations over the years.

Presently he is board director/
chairman for Manitowoc County
Habitat for Humanity. Eis also
currently assists or has served
on various committees and board
of directors for United Way, Big
Brothers Big Sisters, Catholic Charities, and Rogers Street
Fishing Village.

KLC football program announces

2016 team captains
February 8, 2015 The high
school football program for
Kohler Lutheran Christian (KLC)
has recently announced their captains for the upcoming 2016 football season. The players are junior
running back/linebacker Sam
Kohler; junior center/linebacker
Luke Silvestri and junior quar-

terback/defensive back Brayden

Van Ess. All three players earned
all-conference selections last season, led by Van Ess, who was a
unanimous first team choice as
quarterback.
This is the first time the coaching staff has ever named captains
before the start of the football

season. We had great leadership from these juniors during

the 2015 football season, says
Matt Zavada, head coach of KLC.
These young men exhibit the
leadership qualities we need to
continue moving the program in
the right direction. Our thought is
simple let the leaders lead and

build chemistry and camaraderie

throughout the off-season, which
will pay big dividends this upcoming season. With the quality
and quantity of returning lettermen we have coming back, we
have very high expectations for
2016. Strong leadership will be
key to our success.

Last year the KLC cooperative

program had its first winning season in the history of the program,
finishing 6-3. They also qualified
for the playoffs for the first time,
bowing out to top-seed Freedom
in the first round.

Kohler Athletic
Booster Club seeks
new leadership
The Kohler Athletic Booster
Club needs your help! At the end
of this school year, all 4 positions
on the Kohler Athletic Booster Club executive board will be
vacant, and an active search for
replacement candidates is underway. If new board members are
not replaced, the Booster Club
will disband and future funding
for Kohler athletics will be at
risk. New funding policies were
put in place over two years ago to
ensure all sports receive fair support from the Booster Club. The
Booster Club has proudly given
over $50,000 over the last three
years to support all Kohler sponsored athletics.
The Kohler Athletic Booster
Club is a volunteer organization
comprised of parents and community members whose common
goal is to enhance the athletic
experience for all Kohler High
School athletes and athletic teams.
The mission of the KABC is to:
To encourage and support athletes
and athletic programs at KHS.

Raise money to provide additional funding for all High

School athletic programs.
To stimulate interest in the
development and support of
all school sponsored athletic
teams.
To recognize the achievements
of individual athletes and
teams.
Assist in building team spirit,
school spirit, and sense of community pride.
The open positions are for
President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. The primary
responsibilities of an executive
board member is to fulfill the requirements of their position, and
to collaborate with other board
members, coaches and school officials to advance the goals of the
KABC. Specific activities and
tasks include:
Developing and conducting
fund raising events such as
Spirit wear sale, Golf Outing,
and Chili Cook-off.
Recruiting volunteers to sup-

port fund raising projects and

staff concession stand during
High School sporting events.
Managing the organizations
financial transactions and distribution of funds to athletic
programs.
Maintain and manage concession stand product inventories.
Engage with school officials
to support long term projects
such as Ebben Field renovation, Weight Room equipment
replacement, and other athletic
facilities improvements.
If you have a talent for organizing, enjoy working with people,
and a desire to get involved with
Kohler High School Athletics,
then the KABC needs you. Anyone interested in being considered
