Mayo Team Spotlight: Zagora

By Kristen A. Borowski
The Mayo Business Plan Competition has officially commenced and
many teams are getting ready to compete. The Bull, Bear & Lion wanted to
sit down with a sampling of these
teams to better understand their goals
and to share their stories with the student body of the School of Business.
Our first team is Zagora. Zagora is a
company specializing in the importation and retail sale of handcrafted
mens Moroccan leather jackets.
It began in Spain a few summers
ago; after an excursion to Morocco and
a stop at a village bazaar, Eric Sawyer, a
Senior Marketing/International Studies
double major, had a business idea.
Inspired by the display of artisan
quality he experienced while visiting a
leather tannery in Fes, Morocco, Eric
set out to replicate the nubuck leather
jacket he saw and to bring it to the US
market.
Eric formed a team with Dave Nacianceno, a junior finance major/
biology minor, and Greg Vaks, a sophomore finance/computer science dou-

ble major. All have entrepreneurial

interestsGreg is a founder of an IT
start-up, Luxser Technologies; Dave is
a founder of Garmentist, a company
that imports Japanese clothing; and
Eric was Sales and Marketing Director
of Project Spotter, a start-up which
won third place in last years Mayo
Competition.
Zagora will import nubuck leather
jackets from Marrakech, Morocco. The
exportation of jackets from Morocco
will be facilitated by partnerships that
Zagora has already established with
wholesale agents in Marrakech.
Zagora will focus on e-commerce
and online retailing during its first two
years of operations. Then, the company
will expand to sell jackets to retail
stores.
The Zagora teams goal from the
Mayo Business Plan Competition is to
win so that they can help finance their
marketing campaign and fund their
minimum wholesale order. Zagoras
overall goal is to promote quality leather products to millennial males in or-

der to stay true to their slogan:

Respect the Artisan.
Zagora jackets are for the modern
millennial manfashionable, appreciative of world culture, and longing for
adventure. Zagora is collecting preorders now. Any student who wishes
to experience Moroccan craftsmanship
and wear a Zagora jacket free for a day
can contact Eric Sawyer by e-mail at
info@zagoraleather.com.
If you are involved with a team
competing in the Mayo Business Plan
Competition, we would like to hear

Book Review:

BIG DATA IV

Leading Women: 20 Influential Women Share Their Secrets to

Leadership, Business and Life

Data Mining Analyzes Big Data

By David W. Letcher, Ph.D.
Professor Emeritus

By Alyssa J Freitas
After the electric response to Sheryl
Sandbergs Lean In, 20 women leaders
in business came together to publish a
more practical guide for women to create a career and life they love. While a
great starting point, according to coauthor Nancy D. OReilly, Lean In does
not exactly provide concrete action for
women to take to realize their full potential as business leaders with a vibrant life. She calls on the expertise of
bestselling authors, advocacy leaders,
televisions hosts, and a variety of others
to provide women with a roadmap to
excel in their careers while never losing
sight of their families and personal fulfillment.
The book is divided into three parts
with a selection of essays for each,
guiding readers to seize opportunities
and ensure that they are going after
their professional aims with purpose.
The first part addresses the unique external environment in which women
must operate where there are certain
expectations and requirements to do
well. From the challenge of being seen

and heard in a professional setting to

the cultivation of inherently soft skills,
the essays illustrate the steps women
can take to thrive. The second part
deals with the internal environment
and the dialogue women keep with
themselves that can either aid or hinder
their performance. Finally, there is a
call to action for women to support one
another and to understand each others
leadership capabilities.
The actions and mindset of these
women demonstrate the variety of
leadership styles that can emerge.
Through each essay it becomes clear
that there is no one type of good leader,
but rather common core characteristics
which can be manifested in different
ways. This is a freeing mindset which
allows the reader to contemplate his or
her own natural tendencies and understand how to leverage them to their
fullest potential. This conversation on
womens leadership continues to
heighten awareness that a woman can
be powerful without sacrificing her
femininity.

We look now at the relationship

between big data and data mining.
Remember, we are entering a world of
data characterized by the 3V model
first described in 2001 by Doug Laney,
now at the Gartner Group, as high volume, fast velocity and wide variety
which requires software and hardware
tools designed to house and analyze
this new kind of data. These kinds of
data files are referred to as big data.
So how are big data and data mining
related to each other? The first describes the data sets themselves while
the latter represents the process of analyzing those data sets. So you see, one
is the data while the other is the process of analysis (mining).
Data mining appeared in the literature around 1990. It is really a collection of many methods used to draw
inferences from data. Being both descriptive as well as predictive, it includes processes in which searches are
made for patterns in big data data
sets. Its tools include database management systems, descriptive and inferential statistics, visualization tools,
artificial intelligence, and machine
learning in all their many varieties and
mutations.

Visualization has come into wide

use as it offers the business analyst an
enormous number of ways to display
data in a myriad of graphical styles.
Artificial intelligence is a branch of
computer science that makes use of a
computers ability to reason like a human being.
Machine learning deals with the
study and construction of mathematical rules called algorithms, that actually gain knowledge from the data and,
from what they learn, make predictions.
Practical results of data mining that
are of value to businesses range from
data summarization and report generation, modeling of the data through regression analysis, analyses of customer
buying habits (marketing professors
like to cite the diapers beer buying
pattern discovered at a Midwest grocery store some years ago), and discovering unusual records for credit card
holders.
So, we see below a picture representing how big data is analyzed by
data mining thus providing value to
the business establishment!

Relational database management

systems store data in row-by-column
tables that are related to each other by
means of common columns.
These
tables can be queried for knowledge
using the Structured Query Language
(SQL).
Statistical analysis can be used descriptively to discover trends, and correlations as well as inferentially to obtain predictive relationships between
variables.
