Name: Jessica Riesel

Date: 10/20/15
Grade Level: 10
Content Area: Modified Mathematics
Topic of Lesson: Multiplication and Division of Fractions
Time: 40 minutes
Class Description: This is an I.E.P. driven 12:1:1 class (12 students, 1 teacher, and 1 licensed
teacher assistant). Although the students in the class are in grade 10, they function at a second to
fourth grade level in math. This Modified Math Class offers much differentiation based on
specific students abilities. The class contains 2 female students and 1 male student.
Common Core Standards:

CCSS.Math.Content.5.NF.B.4
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or
whole number by a fraction.
CCSS.Math.Content.5.NF.B.7.b
Interpret division of a whole number by a unit fraction, and compute such quotients. For
example, create a story context for 4 (1/5), and use a visual fraction model to show the
quotient. Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that 4
(1/5) = 20 because 20 (1/5) = 4.

Objectives:

Students will be able to multiply a fraction by another fraction

Students will be able to divide a fraction by another fraction

Scaffolding:

Knowledge of numerators and denominators

Knowledge of multiplying numbers

Modifications:

Students will be able to use a calculator, multiplication matrix, and word problem
identification sheet depending on their IEP specific needs for mathematics.

Instructional Procedures:

Bellringer
o Teacher will have Bell Ringer on the board when students arrive in class
o Multiply 4 times 8

Teacher and LTA will correct Bell Ringers individually as students complete their
BellRingers
o Teacher will go over the Bell Ringer on the board when everyone is done.
o Teacher will ask class, Who knows how to multiply fractions?(Word problems
are in our daily lives; this is how we use fractions in real life; baking, etc.)
Whole Class
o Teacher will have students turn their attention to the board
o Teacher will bring up SmartBoard presentation
3 5
o Teacher will show students how to multiply a fraction ( 4 6 )
o

o
Individual Work
o Teacher will hand out differentiated worksheets based on students reading and
math abilities.
o Students will complete these worksheets
o Students will be able to use word problem chart, matrix, and calculator if needed
per IEP requirements.
o Teacher and LTA will rotate through the room helping students as needed and
grading problems when completed.
o With any remaining time students may go on IXL math to work on fractions and
word problems
Closure
o Teacher will ask students, again, Why is it important that we understand word
problems involving fractions? (Teacher will look for different answers than what
was previously given, but similar answers will be accepted).

Assessment:

Student participation
Student completion of the Bell Ringer
Students will be given worksheets and they will be scored when they are done. They can
bank their scores in their bank books when they are done.

**Bank Books: In order to teach check book skills each student has been given a fake set of
checks, a register, and deposit slips. They convert their grades to money and are able to deposit
them. They then keep track of their balances and save money to be used on future spending
days.**
