General note:
All of these licks are designed to be played over a 12-bar jazz/blues progression in
F. For each lick, weve shown exactly which bars (measures) are used. Some start
from the beginning, but others are used in the middle of the progression or for the
turnaround at the end.
This is the full chord progression...
F7 -- Bb7 -- F7 -- Cm7 F7
Bb7 -- Bb7 Bdim7 -- F7 -- D9
Gm7 -- C7 -- F7 D9 -- Gm7 - C7
In the descriptions for each lick, the bar numbers refer to just the specific lick, not the
whole progression.
LICK 1
Bars 1-8
I started with a typical bebop approach: an Am7 arpeggio against the F7 chord.
The E and G notes of this arpeggio are an enclosure around the F note and works
very well over the minor 7th (Eb) in the F7 chord (an enclosure is a melodic device,
where a target note is approached via the notes above and below it).
I used a lot of chromatic passing notes and patterns around the chord notes of
the progression. At bar 4, I used several altered notes over the F7 (#9, b9, #5) to
introduce the subdominant chord (Bb7) at bar 5. At bar 6, I play against the original
harmony using Bbmin6, which is typical modal interchange of the Jazz/Blues
language.
