Professional Growth Plan

January 4 April 2
In the four months that I will be teaching in a Second Grade classroom,
I would like to focus on the following three goals. These are things that
I have been working on throughout my practicum and still feel I can
improve upon before I graduate. As well, I think they are extremely
important for my practice, especially as a starting teacher.
My goals are:
1. Ensure that I am making anecdotal, formative assessment notes
on the progress my students are making. I am already doing
formative assessment checks by looking at my students work
while they are working and at the end of a lesson and asking
questions while teaching. However, I would like to improve upon
my formative assessment practice by taking the information I
have gleaned from these practices and writing it down to help
me remember what I have seen.
a. I will attempt to reach this goal by creating assessment
charts that match up with the report card levels and the
SLOs and learning objectives I have for the lesson at hand.
b. I will also utilize little note pads or stick notes to take quick
jot notes on the observations I have been making.
2. Improve my classroom management skills and abilities. While I
have definitely grown throughout my practicums, I still struggle
with keeping students on task, intervening as soon as an
inappropriate behaviour occurs, and getting students to focus
quicker.
a. I will attempt to reach this goal by changing my teaching
style to include student activities even while I explain
topics so their attention is less likely to wander than if I am
simply talking
b. I will use a variety of attention getting strategies (clapping
rhythms, If you can hear me touch your)
c. I will focus on students who are exhibiting appropriate
behaviours (making a special note to include those
students who are off task most when they are on task)
before reprimanding those who are not exhibiting
appropriate behaviours

3. Differentiate my lessons. I have a wide range of abilities in my

classroom, especially in terms of vocabulary and mathematical
skills. I would like to improve upon my differentiation to ensure
all students are learning at a pace that is beneficial to them
a. I will attempt to reach this goal by providing more difficult
work for those who have already understood/ mastered the
skill/ knowledge piece being taught. They will be given
more and more difficult questions to ensure they are not
bored.
b. I will provide them with extra work to complete to take
their knowledge even further. For example, in word work, I
will ask them to create sentences, or paragraphs with
words that meet our word families as opposed to simply
creating words.
