Harmonicas, Kazoos and Nose Flutes

- read The Harmonica Man
- show a harmonica to the students and play it the best you can so they can hear
the sounds it makes
- explain that each hole is 2 notes:
1 pitch when breathing in and 1 pitch when breathing out
- harmonica belongs to the woodwind family

- listen for the train sounds
- point out the bracket around his neck - the harmonica can go in it
so he can play the harmonica at the same time as another instrument
like a guitar

- show a kazoo to the students and play it the best you can so they can hear the
sounds it makes
- compare the kazoo to the harmonica by comparing sounds and pitches
- show the students a comb and a piece of tissue paper - fold the tissue over the
comb and hum through it
- make a kazoo:
- use a paper towel roll or a toilet paper roll
- cover one end with a piece of tracing paper or wax paper, wrapping an
elastic around it
- put packing tape over the elastic to secure the paper
- color the tube with crayons and felt pens
- to play the kazoo:
- a steady blow is too much, do-do-do is better
- discuss how the tracing paper vibrates when you play (touch it with your
finger to feel the vibrations)
- the sound is amplified through the tube like a microphone
