Lesson Plan Number Plane (-) Yr 8

Day: M T W T F Date: 16th Feb 16 Time: 9.00-9.55pm Year: 8

Learning Area: Maths Topic: Introducing the Number Plane (- quadrants)
Curriculum content description: (from ACARA) Mathematics / Year 6 / Measurement and
Geometry / ACMMG143. I ntroduce the Cartesian coordinate system using all four quadrants.

Students prior knowledge and experience: (Outline what the students already know about this
topic)
"

Students have previously investigated the number line in a positive and negative direction
and understand addition and subtraction of positive and negative integers.
Students have investigated ordered pairs in the positive quadrant of the number plane.

Learning purpose: (May refer to the Elaborations of the curriculum content description here)

Understand that the number plane provides a graphical or visual way of describing location.

Learning objectives:

Evaluation:

On completion of this lesson, students will

be able to:

(Explain how you will know that lesson objective have

been achieved / monitor student learning)

(What will students know and be able to do at the

completion of the lesson specific, concise and
attainable objectives)

Will be able to plot and recognise

coordinate points on the number plane
using all four quadrants.

Student will demonstrate understanding

by completing worksheets - plotting and
recognising points in all four quadrants
of the number plane.

Students will also demonstrate

understanding by taking turns to identify
coordinates and quadrants on a number
plane on the board and assessing each
others attempts.

Preparation and Resources:

(Detail what resources will be used and what other preparation of the learning environment will be required)

" Paper / Pens / Pencils / Textbooks and Rulers.

Catering for diversity (detail any adjustments considerations for educational/resource adjustments)

"

Have an awareness of students who may need more assistance or encouragement. Check
on them individually while they are doing the number plane worksheet.

"

Have an extension activity ready for students who finish early.

Introduction: (How will I engage the learners?)

Welcome students at the door as they enter with reminder to get ready for mental maths.
Wait for quiet and then start the lesson with prayer.
Return Homework from Friday.

2.

Sequence of learning experiences: (What will you do to help the students achieve the
learning objectives? What tasks and activities will the students be involved in to help achieve
the learning objectives?)

PART 1
"
"

Tell students that today for Mental, they will continue to practice adding and subtracting
integers.
Solutions on the board. Students correct own work.

PART 2
"
"

"
"
"

"

Project a number plane on the board with all labels: X axis, Y axis, Arrows, Origin (0,0).
REMINDER: The position of any point can be represented by an ordered pair of numbers
(x, y). These ordered pairs are called the coordinates of the point. X always goes first, just
like in the alphabet.
Discuss all 4 quadrants: Just two intersecting number lines that make 4 quadrants, called
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th.
So we can use negative numbers to identify a point, just like on a number line.
Get students up at the board 1 at a time to mark and label given coordinates on the board.
Has to show class the ordered pair and the identified point. Class decides if it is in the right
place. Each students gives the next student an ordered pair to mark.
Quick Quiz: I say an ordered pair and they respond with its quadrant.

PART 3
"

identifying Ordered Pairs with a game of Skittles Bingo (attached). First student to finish
sheet correctly gets another 5 skittles. Must place the skittle and write the ordered pair.

PART 4
"
"

Handout worksheet 1 to identify coordinates in all four quadrants (Girt By Sea attached).
Students who finish early can do another worksheet - Number Plane Crossword.

3.

Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarise the learning and relate it to the lesson
objectives?)
Tell students that we have looked at all four quadrants of the number plane - tomorrow we
will write up notes.
Students to practice organisational skills by filing their work and packing away files and
texts on the shelves before leaving.

Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why?)

This class is such a pleasure to teach! Having the boys learn to plot
cartesian points with a bag of skittles was a big hit!
I had all of the students completely engaged in an activity where they
were all sitting with their eyes closed and had to call out which
quadrant of the cartesian plane specific ordered pairs belonged to.
I am aware that many of the students in this support class have specific
learning difficulties and that I need to use a variety of activities, none of
which run for too long. Because I was trying to be mindful of this timing,
I made an error with judging how long to run this eyes closed activity
for. I finished it and moved on a little too quickly. After debriefing with
my mentor, I realised that some of the students had just started to get it
and could have benefited from running this activity a little longer.
I think that being able to read the class accurately and decide on the
right time to progress the lesson is a skill that will improve with
experience and reflection.

1/ 2 - 4 = -2

2/ -2 + (-4) = -2 - 4 = -6

3/ 5 + (-8) = 5 - 8 = -3

4/ -3 - (-3) = -3 + 3 = 0

5/ 5 - (-1) = 5 + 1 = 6

6/ -7 - 4 = -11

7/ 10 - (-3) + 5 = 10 + 3 + 5 = 18
